i am looking to buy a defender 90 project in the next 6 months. nothing too special just after a bit of fun.
what are the main things i should look out for ?

hi there Turboman
what sort of price would i be facing for a half descent early 90s defender 90 2.5 tdi pick up ?
How long is a piece of string! ;) :)

TBH good ones of those arent that common these days, probably good money for a genuine vehicle. Pick up is usually known as truck cab in Landrover circles!
All the bodies are pretty interchangeable, and dont alter price much, except station wagons are a bit more sought after.

would i be better to just buy a road worthy vehicle rather than a project ?
being 17 the biggest problem for me is the insurance. i have friends that have insured their defenders for under 900 pounds but im receiving quotes of nearly 2500 pounds!
any recommendations on what models or body types

Pretty all 90s are projects to be honest, even ones that run, just due to age.
Things you'll probably need to look at (as part of project - from my own experience with my 90):
  • Chassis (especially the rear x-member) - you'll struggle to find one that hasn't been welded at some point.
  • Bushes
  • Brakes
  • Hand brake
  • Diffs & half shaft wear
  • Diff lock
  • Electrics (keep finding perished/snapped cables on mine)
  • Steering box

Yes, but be prepared to pay for it. Good older defenders are sought after.

Insurance is going to be expensive if you are young. Shop around, but dont expect too much, you will have to thake the hit until you build up no claims.
You might like to consider a series on classic insurance, might be a bit more reasonable, not sure?

How much you planning on spending then pal?
I already have a little bit of saving but not millions :) all going to plan shortly after my 18th birthday maybe around about august of this year i am willing to spend around 5000 including insurance so looking about 3500 to 4000 on the actual truck that's for something i could just insure and drive not a project
