Wondering whether anyone could help.

I have a tinkering/rattling noise under the freelander whilst driving along. It sounds as though something is tapping away against something, such as a heat sheild, that kind of sound.

It doesn't always occur and its not a wheel speed. It doesn't affect the performance of the vehicle. I have checked the exhaust and the vcu, central bearing, diff mounts and propshafts, they are all fine with no play.

Could it be my baffler or parts broken up in the cat??

The noise isn't there at idle when stationary - but the more you drive (vehicle warming up) it the more the noise is apparent.

Again its no bangs, bumps or grinding just a tinkering noise and its becoming frustrating.

Thanks for your time.

I had a ringing ringing noise on mine when I had it and traced it to a small bracket that had a loose nut on it situated if I remember near the turbo - you have to get the belly pan off to do it - unbelievable difference though.

Thanks for your input guys, I did bang the exhaust with no real sound coming from it, but was thinking with the warm exhaust gases being pushed through the exhaust, if something was loose it could cause the sound.

I will have a look at the turbo brackets and that area. It seems more pronouce going over bumps or under braking at first and then becomes more apparent as it warms up. Its a 51 plate TD4.

Drive shafts would be more of a knocking/thumping noise wouldn't it?

Thanks again.

look at the heat shield attachment points, also the exhaust mount as it exits the front subframe, a clean break here and they just squeak on movement, and as has been suggested, somewhere there is a loose nut or bolt , causing a rattle.
