Not sure I'm doin' this right. I'm Loz, in West Sussex, and I just joined up so a big HI to all landy lovers out there.
I need a bit of advice asap on the old favourite : Timing Belts!
I needed a bit of work for MOT and got the guy to change the belt while he was at it. About 100 miles and I'm stranded by the road - got it back to his shop and he took front cover off to inspect (Defender 300tdi) only to find that the shoulder on the crank gear had snapped off and chewed up the belt... push rods snapped, rocker snapped, I'm sure you experts know the scene. Having just shelled out a grand for the MOT work, I'm pretty p***d off naturally. He is all smiles because "It wasn't our fault - could've gone any time..." I'm sure there are many of you out there who are old hands with these so can any one tell me : 1. Does it sound reasonable to you i.e. 188000 miles and this part fails right after he's been in there? 2. While I can see these shoulders are a bit weak, what could cause it to shear? (Any common mistakes when fiddling in that area?)
Soon as I get my workshop built, I'm doing all work myself from now on! It's my work vehicle, so I'm up s**t creek without it, xmas break means he can't get parts 'til early Jan. He is an established Landrover mechanic but I suspect he made a simple mistake and isn't man enough to wear it. I wouldn't mind a bloke saying "Sorry, I cocked up" - we all do. Just thought I'd get some feedback from those who know, so that I'm more knowledgable when I discuss it with him after christmas.
Sorry to introduce myself by begging for help, but I've not been over in UK for 30 years and don't have a network of Landy lovers around!
Look forward to meeting some of you sometime

Difficult one to be honest - are there any fresh looking tell tale signs that it got a knock or bash during the work? Has a screwdriver or something been used to try and lever the belt on.

Sorry to hear about your troubles - if he is not paying for it I would get it back to your own place and do all the work yourself - paddocks or craddocks is where you want to get your parts and you will be able to get all the parts to fix the things damaged.

When my timing belt snapped it cost me £21 for the belt and rods, I was lucky and my rockers didn't get damaged.

The rocker parts are here - Engine_Parts

timing belts on the page before.
