Due to do timing belt and ordered the very latest kit from Paddocks.
Kit came as described only no collar on either new pulley or tensioner.
My fault, was advised to get latest kit on this forum.
Anyway vehicle stripped new pulley fitted, checked old tensioner, looks very good and has done guaranteed 60k miles. Left in situ.
Big question, do i leave it for next 60k(will take me about 6/7 years) or do I order the tensioner with collar and go to the bother of all the stripping down etc. again.
thoughts please.
total mileage on car is only 112696 miles.

I wonder if the poster believes that with the new-style kit the idler and the tensioner have a flange on them to keep the belt in place.

I don't believe this to be correct, I thought it was only the crankshaft pulley??

think your right, i misread it ,it is only crank pulley that should have flange on edges to guide belt .and idler and tensioner shouldnt have on later kit so kit would be right ,unlike earlier tensioner which did have

Learning all the time with Disco's.
Kit I ordered , on advice, did not have crankshaft pulley.
Fitted idler pulley, new belt and left old tensioner in place.
What i am asking is, for the immediate future, can I leave old tensioner in place at present or should i get a new one with collar and have it fitted.
Has to go to garage to be done, no proper facility and getting too old to attempt job my self. Becoming expensive.
Thoughts please.

on later kit that you should fit ,you should fit new idler pulley new tensioner ,and only pulley with collar or edges is crank pulley

hello james,
I understand what you are saying.
At present my car is running with New idler pulley, new belt and old tensioner.
All i am asking is at present is it reasonable to keep running car until i get a new tensioner and should i also fit a new crankshft pulley as well.

Thanks James, for the last bit about using the tensioner.
I intend to order a new tensioner with collar then discuss with my garage about some help with the cost. Obviously another new gasket too.
lot of bills at present, just renewed road tax today.

cheers

why would you expect your garage to fit your new tensioner at a discounted rate?

who actually did the work in the first place?
you supplied the parts?
who was it that decided not to fit the new tensioner when the belt was changed?

Jim, can I be cheeky & ask how much you were charged for the belt replacement? I've been quoted £80-120 for time only with me supplying parts & wondered if it's about right.

By the way, when I asked about job I was old to make sure I got a new tensioner.

Ricc--- in answer to your query ,my garage owner is a very fair guy and if he can help me on cost he will, I can only ask. He himself checked the tensioner on car and suggested we leave in place , to which I agreed because the new tensioner I had supplied had no collar and neither of the two local LR dealers could supply one.

iwantone-------- I was charged £165 which also included fitting a new aircon belt and a new serpentine belt.

cheers

Slight tangent - sorry. I have no service history with the 97 90, no surprise there, how do I know if the belt needs changing or is it simply a case of change it in case it hasnt been done?

if your unsure change it ,later kit uses guides only on crank pulley as belt was ben damaged on some by guides on the tensioner ,the belt is better guided by driving pulley
