my head gasket went, replaced with a pattern part which was thinner than the 2 spot landrover one ( did not know this when we put it on) this resulted in a tappet finger No 7 breaking while going 70 down the motorway. Had this fixed a week later no2 went, had this fixing ( on holiday at the time) GOt back form Hols and took the head off replace gasket with 3 Spot landrover one. Noticed that we had marks on the pistons were the valve had been touching the piston crowns ( this was not there the first time we did the head) Now no3 tappet arm has broken could this been down to valve timing. Could the belt have been damaged by the broken fingers or jumped when the first finger broke ?

sounds like you've got the valve timing wrong, before anything started breaking, it must have been making a racket.

recheck the valve timing, replace any broken rockers and check the pushrods, these will more than likely be bent too

Thanks we thought it might be that. She has always been a bit loud. I had the conversion done at a main dealer just over a year ago, could it have run all this time with the timing out a bit? Any idea the cost of getting it done?

i wouldnt have thought so, if the timing was out then, it would have been breaking rockers then, my guess is the belt was too loose and it slipped, strange though as there is no need to touch the belt when doing the head

I did not touch the belt when I did the head, no reason to. Could the belt have slipped when the first rocker arm broke and started this comedy of errors? Everyone has always called my car the tractor and it was only when I went in a friends defender I thought should mine be this quite? Good job I love her, it must be a landy thing!
