After 3y off owning a freelander im swapping it for a octavia 1.9tdi estate, ive had no issues in 20k driving but then its serviced well, im going from 32mpg to 54....from 285 tax to 130, so massive savings and the estate has a massive storage to.
Lot blast freelander as rubbish but the 2 ive seen mates have were worn out when they had them ignorance when buying freelanders is biggest problem
Many sold no prop and 1.8 is truely one to avoid.
its been very reliable but with the outstanding octavia beating it hands down it has to go.
its a fact the defender boys and discovery lads think there dogs dodas over the freelander but ive known a few discovery owners have lot more breakdowns and faults than they like to admit.
so by freelander.

The Octavia has just two things that put me off. The fact that it's using questionable quality, VW mechanicals. And it's as dull as dishwater to drive. Otherwise it's a good car to own, if space is needed.
Don't expect Freelander reliability though ;):p.
Good luck with the new car.

the vw pd engine 1.9tdi is a knoen legend 240k no probsall taxis use them.
that said i had no issue with td4 freelander , all about servicing.
def not awe inspiring lol....but now its vw bit more faith, ill miss driving position
cheers

Are you part-exchanging the Freelander or selling privately. What year is it? Is it a TD4? 3 door or five door? Cloth or leather seats etc.?

A mate at work has a 1.9 golf, I could list the replacement non consumable parts it's had but we'd be here a while, currently warranty claims clear £2500 with a full vw history, sakes as any modern car can easily rack up.

Most things with an LR badge have the potential to be money pits, don't think many would deny that!

I had two Octavias, a Zafira and a Renault Megan in the last 12 years, all from new. The only car I had to call the AA for was the Octavia for an electrical fault.
Not that The others were fault free but only minor issues.

we had the top range megane ....thank god under warranty...load junk...keyless entry packed in twice, all 4 injector coils went over 12m...auto wipe and lights on packed up..rubbish.
Zafira good reliable cars or was

I had only minor issues with the Megan but the dealer was rubbish. Blamed me for not operating the leccy window switches correctly when I complained about them being intermittent. Tried to say aircon will make a loud screeching when it needs gassed. Funny old thing but regassing it didn't fix it. The worst was when I asked them to replace the wipers while in for a service and they told me they didn't need replacing even though they were completely shot.

The 1.9 PD is a fabulous engine. However it MUST use the correct PD approved oil which MUST be changed on time. If either of those are ignored, the cam shaft WILL fail in 80K miles. Otherwise the PD is much tougher than any other engine in it's class!!
All VW based vehicles have electrical gremlins with door locks and window mechanisms on occasion. Sometimes easy to fix, other's expensive to fix..
Brake discs are known to warp and handbrakes not meeting MOT requirements.
Otherwise it's much like any other modern car. Dull to drive. Imo.
