im a bit of a noob to all this so any help would be gratefull,i have a 51 plate freelander 2l td4 and it has developed a ticking noise coming from the rear drivers side ive only noticed it when not moving or after just starting.does anyone have any idea or anyone else had this problem??

As this a diesel, does it have a fuel burning heater (fbh)?
I suspect this is the fbh running on the cold mornings.
This is not a problem, this is normal. Time to worry is when it doesn't do it.
It has a separate little pump which makes a ticking noise.
If it's not a diesel, and doesn't have a fbh, then we need to think again.

When it's ticking have you walked round the car to check exactly where this ticking comes from?
Could you confirm that the fbh is running at the same time as you hear the ticking?

fbh is on front passenger...this guys noise is from drivers rear
The (ticking) fuel pump for the FBH is under the right rear arch or near the tank depending on year. It's likely resting against the chassis increasing the noise.

You won't mistake the fbh itself - it makes a sort of whooshing sound - a bit like a central heating boiler - which is what it is.
Have a look under the bumper on the front passenger side. If you have a fbh there will be an obvious 1" flexible pipe sticking out through a gap, pointing down, and possible with white smoke coming out and a slight smell of burning diesel exhaust.
It automatically stops after about 5 minutes or so - its purpose is to raise the temp of the coolant quicker than just relying on the engine alone.
Without it your heater will take longer to put out a reasonable temp.
It was a standard fitment on top of the range models and a £400 option on the other models. Lucky you if you have one.
