:p Now then, can anyone tell me how to distinguish between a 3 and a 5 bearing motor at a glance. Any help please. Can yer keep it short coz I lose interest in longwinded Proffessor type replies. Apart from that I've had a drink.

Cheers Slob, my old Skipjackpianotunersaltyoldseadogmateyamigo. Engine in question is in my Series 2. Reason I'm asking is cos when I took me gearbox out I noticed me rear crank seal is leaking. Replaced the front seal in the summer (sods law). It's a recon engine painted in pale blue. Runs dead sweet just a bit of a bugger that.
 
Cheers Slob, gonna bear that in mind. Personally I'm in two minds as to whether or not to bother with doing it or not coz she's always leaked mate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Did you find out how you tell the difference? I am currently trying to find out. My haynes is only mentions the 3 bearing engine and I know that the 5 bearing came into being in 1980. Problem is I have a 1980 SWB 2 1/4, so with Solihull being what it is I'm not convinced that this means I have a 5 bearing engine. Engine number is 90291364. Cheers me dears.
 
Right I was having a tinker today and there is a big number 5 cast on top of the engine. Could this indicate that the engine is indeed 5 bearing? Hope so.

The suplementary info at the back of haynes adds the five bearing info. from engine numbers 36100001A Comp 8:1 36400001A Comp 7:1 99100001A Comp 8:1 99200001A Comp 7:1 all engines were 5 bearing. Also 5 bearing engine blocks were red.

Looks like I'll have to re-check my engine number and colour of the block.
