Hi. I currently have a Disco TD5 which i love however my wife drives it on a daily basis and i have an old Golf, which is getting towards the end of its life. I live out in the sticks so i need something fairly rugged but i also do quite a lot of Motorway miles...Now heres the question, will a TD5 or 300tdi defender fit the bill, i know it will be great on the rough country lanes, but what are they like on the motorway compared with the disco?
any advise would be appreciated. also does anybody have any basic performance/economy figures for the 300tdi and td5 defenders. Thanks

So give her the Defender, and keep the Disco.

TD5 is smoother than the 300tdi obviously but it still makes noise when on the motorway with a defender t/case.

like landroversforever says, it might be worth getting the defenders t/case swapped for a disco one if you plan to do a lot of motorway miles in it.

My TD5 does 23mpg on the motorway and is noisy as hell. So if you do get one you'd better get used to it because you won't want to drive anything else.

110 td5 400 miles on a full tank up to 90 miles an hour very very loud at that speed i turn the stereo up best vehicle i have ever had

I have had my TD5 110 from new in 2005 and its the best yet. Worth putting a overdrive on as it will cruse all day at 80 and won't send you mutton. Yep it aint as smooth as a Disco and even the XS County is still basic but it'll still be on the road in 30 years time and will go anywhere. Mine does towing, farming, dinner parties, shooting, long motorways and everybody loves it. Can't beat an original!!:)
