Hi Every one. Just looking for a bit of advice really. I recently did a crankshaft pulley change on my p38 and was quite pleased with the results. The car started first time and i did over 400 miles in it within 2 weeks. The car run 100% without fault. As the tailgates were starting to rot, i decided to treat the car to some newer ones that i bought from someone breaking a 2001 p38. On picking the items up from Manchester (about 45 miles away from home) I got about 2 Miles away from where i picked the stuff up and there were strange noises starting.

To start with, there was a small squeal, like metal rubbing but thought it may just be the two tailgates rubbing? But then the squeal was accompanied by some rumbling from the front end as well. The car now sounds like a can of marbles and cuts out straight away upon pressing the clutch.

Am i right in thinking that the oil pump has now been damaged? When we changed the pulley, we followed the instruction on the RAVE program to the T, all the torque settings and angular setting as well.

I haven't looked at the car since it broke down but am now thinking the engine is now no good. I have chance of an engine from a 525/325 tds with about 140,000 on it. Only thing is, what would i have to change to make it fit in the p38. I know the air filter bit is different and the sump is but is the oil pick up different?

I have got the rave disk if i do get the engine which shows how to remove the engine and refit a new one.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Why did you take the centre boss off to change the pulley?

So is the engine in the car totally screwed now? I have got the other engine just in case. Just wondered if the one in the car was repairable?
