Engine 2.5N/A with a LT 85 box and a LT 230 transfer.

My fuel gauge hasn't worked for a long time, but I normally keep the tank topped up and only make short trips. Well it ran out of diesel going up a hill,
went and got 10 liters. Had a bit of a flat battery so I thought I'd be clever and bump start it in reverse. Oops, something in the box or engine went bang.
I tried turning it over on the key, it turns a couple of times then does a hiccup, sort of like er er hic er er hic. Got it towed home. Now before I start stripping it down any one got any ideas what it could be.

If it's anything like the 2.25 (I think they are fairly identical) the system will need re priming, it's abit fiddly, but if you follow exactly what the service manual says, it pretty easy again don't know about bang, especially as we didn't hear it but handbrake, halfshafts would be a good start to check

Might be a broken half shaft from the bump starting.
Just checked the rear half shafts and they're fine, wouldn't be the front ones as I was in two wheel drive.

I've disconnected the prop shafts and tomorrow I'll whip the gear box off,
it's got a removable cross member so it'll be out in a splish splash,
The bang defiantly came from the bell housing area, I can't see it being a rear axle windup, it's the "err err hic" the the engine makes when trying to turn over that worries me.

If the handbrake was on it wouldn't roll down the hill, but thanks for your thoughts.

Hand brakes have a habit of binding on! Then when the car moves the shoes then shoot back causing a bang. This can happen without feeling any differance in the leaver.

It could also be the clutch slipping as it banged into the flywheel.

When it's in 2 wheel drive, the back wheels are driven NOT the front (assuming a normal setup)

Personally I would get the engine to run as priming is deffo easier than gearbox removal etc. then when the engine runs, see if it drives ok

Handbrake could have been dragging slightly. Had it on mine where the landy had been in a damp field over night and handbrake was stuck slightly on, made a horrendous vibration and clunking when setting off.

You didnt just simply run over anything did you? :D

That gear position would also be an LT77.......

LT85's look like this

Check yer red lever is forward before getting spanners out. Could have just jumped out.
2.25 easy to prime, do all the manual priming stuff then spin with injectors cracked open.
