Thermostat housing upper and lower gaskets - what is the difference?

I notice that the upper and lower gaskets for the thermostat housing on a standard 2 1/4 diesel engine have two different part numbers.

What is the difference between the two? They look the same in the photos to me.

top one should have a larger hole in its center so thinner width
 
It should be ok to only use two new top gaskets, have done this a month ago and the engine has suffered no ill effects. what ever you do done use two bottom gaskets as this could restrict the flow out of the thermostat.

I ordered a kit which comes with one top and one bottom gasket. In the photo they looked the same.
