So today I tried out 4 wheel

However the yellow lever doesn't push down

I understand the red lever is high and low and I can move this and feel the difference but the yellow lever isnt going down what does this mean please

Yellow is for 4wd in high range. When you say not moving you mean it doesn't move if you press hard down on it?
If so, it could just be the linkage is seized or the locking pin isn't moving. Either way you need to look where the linkages where the front prop comes out.

Btw, have you got 4wd in low range?

Remove the gearbox tunnel, lubricate where the shaft goes into the housing, if it still wont move pour boiling water over the housing.
Usually its it seizes where the steel shaft goes through the alloy housing.

Ps theres a sticky in this section called 'wots all them levers for?' or something like that

Cheers,

Yes it will push down just not stay down,

I have 4 wheel drvie in low, just not in high

The gear box tunnel, is the square shaped bit ?

you will have to have a look underneath there are 3 shafts poking out of output housing one nearest gearbox is worked by red knob lever hi 2wd ,low 4wd ,outer shaft that often sticks is behind tin cover ,and center smaller one which has a hole in it which a pin that goes into shaft when yellow knob is up and out when down the center shaft is a pivot for the other 2 shafts when pin is in shaft 4wd cant be selected in high ,when red lever is pulled back into low small shaft should be pulled back so that pin from yellow should go into the hole with kno up ,your linkage has probably broke or come adrift

The red lever MUST be right forward for the yellow knob to lock down. If its in the neutral position the yellow knob won't stay down.

Take the drivers side floor out and you should be able to see the linkage. Pushing the yellow lever down simply pulls a pin out and allows a collar to slide under spring pressure to engage the front axle. There are some selector rods in there which come out above the output flange. They are covered by a tin cover with tubular bits to cover the shaft ends. Over time these can get rusty and the cover fill with mud and dirt. Take the cover off and clean everything up, lubricate it and see if you can tease the thing into life.
