I had a quick look and cudnt find anyfink like this - so here goes.....

Lookin in my local Landy showroom and noticed that the latest RR is over £60K!!, a deepender was about £23K and even the humble!? Hippoo is close to £30K, so i gort thinking (I do occasionally).

As yu can get almost anything fur a landy nowadays as aftermarket stuff, how much would it cost to build one from bits - yu know nice galvo chassis, discs all round, new bulkhead, maybe 200tdi or 300tdi fully refurbed lump , inlcuding Air con, a nice satnav radio, fully kitted - the dogs B's.

I spose it would have to be based on a deepender, coz I dont think Disco and RR body parts are as easily available.

Cummon folks - get yo brains working - the Ultimate Landy - from bits - Surely we cud beat £60K, maybe even £20K?

some sadun must have a spreadsheet listing of all the required parts somewhere, i vaguely remember one of the mags featuring someone who built one bit by bit - it might have been from a cheap CKD kit

i also knew someone who use to work for Peugeot who tried, over a 3 year period, to steal a complete car component by component - and he only got caught because a random audit was carried out on the contents of the "waste" he was taking to landfill which happened to have a perfectly good bodyshell amongst it

some tried this before with some vehicle , which i can't remember what it wur. it may have bin a ford. anyway the total cost of buying the bits came to about 10 times the cost of a new one. and you dint have any new car warranty as such, nor was it easy to get a pile of parts registered.
you might be cheaper buying from the likes of paddocks rather than main stealer but you'd still have registrashun problems

i dont think registration would be an issue - no doubt you'd have to get vosa or whoever to inspect it first, and chances are it'd be on a Q plate

yu mite need (almost certainly) need to get it SVA'd - but the cost could include a "donor car" fur body panels n stuff - I dont think it wud be too expensive.

£1300 fur a chassis
£500 fur a bulkhead.
£2000 fur a donor car
£250 fur wiring.
£4000? fur engine /drivetrain rebuild.

so that makes £8K - still along way orf £20K let alone 60K!

I priced up two options on a Series111. Option one was donor vehicle, new chassis and refurbished/salvaged second hand parts which including cost of respray was £9800.
Option two included Donor vehicle to avoid VOSA/Q Plate issue, new everything to OEM where available or exchange/rebuilt........£13,500.
That included 10% cost for the parts freight/delivery and 30 hours of mechanics helper time.

that compares very well with a "new" one then:D

if yu were to double those costs fur all the bells and whistles an based on a deepender - that still quite comparable with a new one and alot better than a Hippoo or a RR.

Still have to factor in the not immediately obvious costs, such as disposal costs for the old chassis and panels/fuel tanks,(I remember when scrappies paid you for stuff, and not the other way round), additional storage for all the parts, plus those new toys you just have to buy, like bead blast cabinet, new compressor to power the new air tools, etc, etc.

Scrappies are buying cars again as the price of scrap has gone through the roof. or if your really adventurous for £80 you can register as an approved vehicle dismantler and strip and scrap your own cars and you'd get the £80 back easily by taking all the unwanted scrap to a proper scrap metal merchants instead of a car breakers.

SEPA regulations for disposal and waste management up here require a certificate that confirms the material is not contaminated or otherwise likely to cause contamination...........waste management companies licenced here to perform such services are charging an arm and leg. £30 to have an old fuel tank washed out and certified as contaminant free.

Just realised your in jockland so not sure about the regs up there.

ELV's (end of life vehicles and parts) have a specific set of regs here in Scotland, dismantling and processing facilities are licenced and subject to planning regulation approval, emmission and effluent control and monitoring, strict record keeping. So no easy disposal option's for the DIY mechanic, unless you can get it into the wheely bin.

There was program on the t.v recently where they bought a fire damaged RR but the cost of repair using as much s/hand parts as possible was close to what you could buy a s/hand one of the same age etc. I know what one I would have bought.

landies of any sort, excluding perhaps the freelander seem to have a high residual value in any condition, and although this concept you have sounds difficult, and would never work using new parts, you are absolutely bang on in terms of building a very good vehicle at cost if you have the time and space.

And an even better one if you are prepared to cheat a little bit.

If you mean wrecks to riches. I saw that one and they went a bit ott on some of the parts also they figured labour costs into their prices as opposed to diy. and they rarely make much money on any of the cars they do.
