The first things to do with a disco TD5

Hi there chaps and chapesses;
Recently got myself a disco TD5 adventurer - so far really pleased, immediately added a full length roof rack - being in constant use, excellent.

But what next; what are the things I should do to it to improve it

a couple of things I want to investigate:

1. THE EGR conversion - should I do this; what are the benfits?
2. Steering pulls slighty to the left, not a big issue but is there something lurking
3. A rumble at 75mph - from the rear quarters - any ideas
4. Tyres which ones are best, mainly road use, but needs to deal with occasion snow and and wet grass
5. Suspension upgrade - rebush ?? to stiffen up the ride - is this worth doing?
6. is the oil pump lock-tight fixings and issue?
   

Recently replaced green fuel pipe from fuel tank as this wore through to pin hole - after some ringing round to find replacement parts and being put off by full price for set of 4 or £30 quid for single pipe ( this was the re-call repair item) - eventually found local supplier of pipe and for a quid got myself some. removed fittings from original, shaped new pipe & fitted original fittings, reshaped to fit and refitted to vehicle. So far all good and saved myself a small fortune.

Other than that, completed full oil and filter change through-out and waxoyled the chassis.

recon gear box 18 months ago
new front springs and shox
new fuel pressure switch

So what else should I think about? any advice would be much appreciated

Hi Olly and welcome!:welcome2:

In order...

1. EGR.. not sure, mine came with it already done..
2. Could be a range of things, tyre pressures, uneven tyre wear, tracking, steering box wearing, track rod ends, shocks etc.. It's worth checking them all. I had a similar issue but it was wandering badly. It turned out to be steering box, steering dampener, front shock bushes worn, incorrect tyre pressures and tracking badly out. So err, the whole dam lot really!
3. This could be a range of things too.. Wheel balancing can do this, Warped wheels (crash repair etc), right the way through to suspension. I would firstly rub your hand across the tyre front right to left and see if there is any variation. If there is, it will be a shock issue and the uneven tyre will cause rumbling. If not this, try balancing the rears.. Not everyone does them, but I do and I do think it makes a difference.

4. Tyres are completely a matter of choice. I use goodyear wranglers and they are excellent on road and done yearly trips to switzerland in deep snow. So they work fine, but another popular one is pirrelli scorpions. Never tried them, but they have fantastic feedback.

5. again, this is a matter of preference.. Alot of people choose polybushes. They are great, they do stiffen the ride, but choose the right ones. Some are harder than others. Do the research first before choosing them. But there is a trade off. If you stiffen the ride etc with hard bushes, it might wear other components out faster which are not designed to cope with the stresses. Some are better then others. I have them and they work for me.

6. Don't know.

IMHO "improving" it depends what you want to do with it.

If lots of offroad, and you don't have a CDL, have a look at the Ashcroft centre difflock kit - lots of off-roaders swear by them (see August LRO on modded Disco's).

I like All Terrain tyres. Had BFG AT's which were excellent. AT2's almost as good but considerably cheaper. Both good in snow and green-lanes.

If the rumbling from the back is wheel bearings, it'll cost a bit as they're sealed units on a D2. I also had a problem with the bushes wearing on the Watts Linkage, a rather common issue on D2's...
