Oh how I wish I'd done my homework before I sunk 7K into now what seems like is going to be a costly mistake. All seemed rosy until this afternoon when the Landy ground to a hault 1.5 miles down the road chugging out blue smoke and running red hot. 2.5 hours and a low loader journey later im back on the driveway with a coolant system completely void of coolant and engine oil which now has the consistency of beige paint.
I'm not one to usually gripe but the catalogue of web based 1.8 engine faults (namely HG probs) is frightening. Did Landrover ever consider a recall when this problem was obviously widespread? The majority of HG probs did seem to be on pre 2000 cars, so with mine being a 52 plate I am somewhat a little bemused. I can only hope that I caught the prob early enough and dont require a whole new engine.
Now for the important bit, getting it back on the road. Can anybody give me any idea of costs (from gaskets to new engines) and locations of reputable suffolk based garages. I'd like to avoid main dealers for obvious reasons and need somebody who would be prepared to carry out warranty work.

Sorry to hear of your bad luck chappie thats a gutter I'm not a 1.8 owner but from what I read it will cost you anything from a headgasket to a complete head, I have the TD4 Auto and it spat its gearbox when I'd had it about 3 months cost me ni on £2000 to have sorted. fix it or get it fixed then you know its a good un and stick with it...I'm sure you'le get plenty of help on here and advice on where to take it in your area and what costs will be...best of luck cartman690

How long have you had the hippo? Presumably it came from a main dealer or is it just the cost of repair by then thats putting you off

if yer lucky and your heads not warped,then get the new type H G And find out about the thermostat and header tank mod, if Mr LR man is around i'm sure he can offer ya some good idvice, , , best oh luck. . ..:)
 
A thought for those of you with a recent HGF. LR have released a new HG, shim and oil rail. Make sure you get all bits fitted together mind.

New headgasket LVB500190 approx €44 + VAT (~£29+VAT)
New oil ladder LCN000140L approx €52 + VAT (~£34+VAT)

do as ming says always change the thermostat with hgf, also check coolent bottle for air line cracks,the rest you should have on a 52 plate,the above parts are landrovers final offering to cure the 1.8k problems cause they will all be out of warrenty soon
 
Thanks guys, the more info the better as far as im concerned. Smythe, you mentioned about LR's final offering to cure the prob. Would this mean that they are obliged to repair the car free of charge? I assumed I would have to fork out the cash, or go through my own warranty to get it fixed as I am the second owner and I did'nt buy it through a main LR dealer. Any info on Suffolk based garages would be well received.
 
yup as smythe says if ya not gonna get a lr garage to do the job, ensure that who eva ya do get they fit all the latest modifications to it all the parts are cheap enough,

not seen a multi layer gasket fail yet, but they not been out that long :)
 
nope i don`t mean that L/R will fix it for free you`d have to try knocking on longbridge`s door for that one,what i meant was ,rovers engine aye used any more and you get 3 yrs warrenty! most will comeing to an end soon,by the way doe forget ya coolent bottle with the ratchet cap that ya cor over tighten,there aye alot of coolent in the freelander hence it heats up quick,hence it could over heat,hence the HGF(?),hence try and keep the engine as cool as poss,hence hence hence,

! just noticed that the HGF keys on the keyboard are together thats because the inventer of it knew that rover would suffer HGF and they would be used alot:D
 
If the head needs skimming they'll more than likely replace the whole engine. That's what I was told by a LR garage. It's often cheaper to do that and less hassle.
Labour is where the cost lies. It's not just the 1.8 litre petrol that blows gaskets. My 2.5 litre V6 blew one too. That was VERY pricy to put right.

Prior to our purchase our 1.8 Flndr had had (under main dealer warranty) new head (after hg failure), recon engine after 2nd hg failure and days after our purchase hg went again and I got private dealer to fork out for skim and new hg. Been fine for 5k since but temptation to get shot after MOT becoming intense. LR main dealer likely to replace head and not skim and replace hg from experience. If head not warped good engine shop should be able to skim head and get back on road. Dealer that did ours reckoned it cost him around £600 but would take that with largish pinch of salt. Depending how long you have had it from purchase can you not get dealer you bought it from to repair under Sale of Goods Act or any warranty that came with it?
 
Yer right but FGH kinda reverse logic , I use a Zog keyboard ya don't type ya kinda think about it,i think,see it works i will try it again ta prove it wernt a fluke ,here we go,i think,blooming technology eh, , ,:D
 
The dealer I bought it from was the one who took it away on the low loader. Got 6 months warranty left to run on the car with him. The warranty states that the head is covered but not if its cracked or suffering from porosity. Suppose ill have to get down there and check it out myself in case he tries to pull a fast one and wriggle out of paying.
Nothings ever simple!
