Anyone know the best way of tesing a door speaker?

The driver's door one on my 02 ES doesn't work at all (main driver, not tweeter).

When I dissasembled it there was a drop of water in the connector which had obvioulsy run down the wires from the mirror housing.

Am fairly sure it's the speaker, not the wire, but would like to test both and also maybe upgrade.

Was wondering if these would be OK...
eBay.co.uk: PIONEER TS-G1749, 6.5-inch (17cm) 170W CAR SPEAKERS (item 9720803279 end time 27-Jan-07 00:40:47 GMT)

Run an audio cable from your stereo to the speaker, connect terminals.

17cm speakers might be a bit of a squeeze, They will fit the rear of the 3dr, but depth of speaker for window clearance could be a problem. You might have to build a mount/packer on door itself.

Those pioneer speakers are two way, the FL audio is set up for a component system in the front, separate high freq (tweeter) and low/mid range (large speaker). They will still work but high range freq wouldnt be as noticable as its going to the tweeter.

When I checked the tweeter for the passenger side, there wasnt one there

From memory the originals are 15cm ???

Some 17cm will fit, its the chassis design of the speaker plus the amount that the speaker protrudes inwards towards the window.

Either way you will have to drill and self tap for new speakers, or build mount from mdf or fibreglass based on original chassis design.

put a 1.5 volt battery momentarily across the speaker terminals - yu should get a "pop" sound and the cone should jump either forwards or backwards.

thought the speakers that are in there are 17cm???

Any recommendations for what I should replace with then?

I tried to change mine couldnt find any that would fit!

In the end i got some Harman and kardon ones from Land Rover for £55 a pair. They seem to do the trick and sound really good.

Harman kardon are one of the best sound systems. Thats around the norm for upgraded speakers.

Had a look at an old speaker, they are 15cm on exterior but internal diameter is only <13cm, with speaker depth of 4.5cm.

Hello Drew,

I have the Pioneer 1748 (17cm) in my Freelander ES in the front and rear doors.

The sound quality is fantastic, however as far there are no aftermarket mounting kits so you will have to drill the inside of the doors to make suitable mounting points.

Onje thing i will say is that the speakers are very powerful and i found that they caused a lot of vibration on the door card. I got round this by getting some foam and packing it on the inside of the door car. I put it around the speaker and along the bottom of the card and this sorted the problem and i can listen to my music as loud as i want without distortion.

Try this website, it is the cheapest place i have found for these speakers. Got mine about 8 months ago for double this price. I have used MCS before and the service is first class

You need sound deadening self adhesive rubber matting for proper sound control.

Fit the component speakers on the front where cross over box is already installed for tweeter and speaker. Fit two-way speakers on the rear as no cross over box for these

WHen fitting my H/K speakers i fitted Dynamat round the speakers and the bit i had over i put on the inside of the door behind the speaker. works well! i've got plans to do the same to the rears.

My car has already been dynamatd (is that the right way to say it??) however there was still a gap between the door card and speaker which made it vibrate. That is why i put foam on, so rather than vibrating the door card it was absorbed by the foam.
