If you have the tools, the ability and access to the starter motor then all
you have to do is use these to advantage. It is not brain surgery.
Disconnect cables from battery, then from motor then unbolt and remove
starter and any obstruction. Assemble in reverse order.
If you are lacking any of these then get a garage to do it. Should take
about an hour of labour and around here that will cost around £22 plus VAT
plus the probably not unsubstantial price of the motor. If you have to use a
town mechanic or a main dealer then expect double or triple the labour cost.

Thanks Huw

I am doing it trying to do it myself becuase after £500 garage costs it only
worked for a day, I can see the motor and I bought a socket set Its just in
a very awkward spot and I can only see 1 bolt.

Maybe I need to remove more the the metal plate and the wheel?

The car will not move that is another reason for me trying,

Thanks

Why don't you ring the garage and have a chat to the Service manager? If
they supplied and fitted a new starter, and it packed up after one day, they
should come and sort it out. Make it clear that you expect it to be done at
their cost.

Steve
I just noticed your previous post about starting problems and immobilisers.
Maybe you haven't had your starter replaced?
Before you try removing the starter, I would make sure that there is voltage
to the solenoid (usually mounted on the starter) when the key is turned. You
could use a multimeter, or failing that a 12volt light with one side
connected to earth (the chassis). If there isn't 12volts then the problem is
in the starting circuit, fuse/wiring/connections/key switch/immobiliser, (if
there is one)
It is possible to simply bypass all this, but you need to know what you are
doing.

If there *is* 12v at the solenoid and the starter isn't turning, then it
could be a faulty solenid. I'm not familiar with the terranno, you may be
able to remove and check the solenoid without removing the starter

hope this helps

Perhaps the £500 repair was not related to the starter motor? But if it was,
then yes, in all likelyhood you shoud get it repaired again free, unless it
is something related but not actually repaired, like a dodgy relay or
flywheel ring gear. These are just examples....... no need to panic Steve.

I had a problem with starting my Maverick at New Year. Battery been on
for 5 years, was half expecting it to give up. Called recovery. He
jumped it direct from his truck ok. I bought a new battery that same
day and went away with the caravan for the New Year break. Two weeks
later after a day out, could not start it, starter motor really
struggling.Called out my local MOT/repair centre. He tried to start it
from a power pack. No go. Diagnosed STARTER motor. He replaced it within
a couple of days. Two weeks later, Starter dog having trouble
disengaging. Garage replaced it WITHOUT cost (it was easier this time
as the bolts were not rusted in). This last Friday, wife went to start
it. Starter motor turned engine but was not going to have it. Let
Ignition key return to rest, starter motor is still turning engine.
WHAT!! Remove key from ignition. Starter motor is "STILL" turning
engine. Put key back in ignition to try to and stop it turning but
now the starter motor is revving its nuts off, but not turning the
engine. She phones me at work. I tell her to call out the garage
and try and disconnect the battery. "I know that was asking to much".
But I would drive to her. That was a twenty minute drive. As I a
pproached her location, there was a column of black smoke coming
from the vicinity. That was someone's garden fire but when I got to
her, the fire tender was attending and the garage man had arrived
and was disconnecting the battery. The Fire Tender. She had called
them out as the truck was puthering smoke from under the bonnet. The
garage have ordered another starter motor from another company and
will be, I am assured, claiming any costs on the insurance of the
initial supplier. This will include any bill from Fire Service and
for any other damage to the vehicle, harness, battery etc;

Any one else suffered similar?

I will keep you posted.

UPDATE.
Had the car back now for two weeks. Garage have fitted a BRAND NEW
starter motor. Cost of unit was 60ukp more the reconditioned one
fitted at the first instant.
This was all done at no extra cost to me. At time of posting, no
bill from Fire Service.

Now thats a result.
