dont know if this helps and i am sure more experienced owners will add input but this worked for me.
i had a fault where my temp guage was reading on the edge of the red, yet i was confident that the engine was not itself running hot. i checked this with a thermometer in the top of the rad and it read 67c the thermostat opens at 71c. the rad was hot at the top and got cooler towards the bottom but was still warm all over.
i am told that this is a common fault caused by mismatching guage/sender.
i ran the engine to get it to correct temp then removed the +ve from the back of the guage, i then added a resistor between the +ve wire and the guage, 22 ohms was enough that the guage then sat perfectly in the middle of the "N" and not on the red.
this seems to work and the guage now reads correctly.
