Hi guys & girls,

I am new to this site and I have been looking for some topics which compare the new 07 defender and the current TD5.

I have just come back from an off roading event in morocco and I was surprised on how capable a 110 is compared to a 90. In most cases we found that the 110 went more extreme than a 90, we didn’t have the same driver in either vehicle but on several different terrains it won.

So on my return I have decided to sell my disco V8 and I am thinking of buying a new / nearly new 110 crew cab preferably in black (if anyone knows of one for sale!).
I am going to go into my local dealer this weekend but I am not sure whether he will try to sell me the ends of the td5’s or try to get an 07 ordered, this is the first time I am thinking of buying a £20K + vehicle and I am a bit wary of buying a car that I first of the production line, I have friends who have had many TD5’s and they seem a very reliable engine, so I am keen to get reliability. But a brand new car does come with warranty and I think the transit engine so can’t be all bad ?!

So here’s the $1M question –

Would you buy a nearly new TD5, a brand new TD5 or wait for the new 07 defender to come out next year? I can’t find much spec on anyone comparing so I thought I would post here.

Answers on a postcard!

I think the new one should be good, still the same defender, just new engine and gearbox really.

However you are right in thinking that you could end up being one of those owners whos vehicles faults become the front page in the technical bulletin.

I personaly would go for an almost new TD5, but theres not much chance of me buying a TD5.

There are discounts and cheap finance available of the Defender right now. I think, on balance, that a strongly negotiated 110 from stock will hold its value equally well, have less teething trouble, and will be a better long term proposition if you intend to keep it for many years.

If you intend to keep it standard and run it for just 2 to 3 years wait for the new one.

How many seats do you need? As the 07 model are all forward facing and therefore less seats. Engine, heater, a/c, 6 speed gearbox, all look to be good on the new one. Should get big discount on TD5 but probably nothing off an 07 model. I wouldn't by an 07 model until it's at least 6 months into it production run. Do you really want to sort their production problems out for them?

good points, i want to fully kit it out (finance permitting), and will probably only have it a few years as i get board very easily!

i think the seating will stay the same as i want a double cab.
