Cheers

It seems to me, as an impartial independent neutral observer that the balance of opinion among the participating members tends to suggest a slight bias towards favouring the 300 tdi over the TD5.

I've got a Disco TD5. Under 3 years old, 35 k miles.
I've been driving since 1960.
My confidence in the reliability of my present TD5 Disco is by far lowest of any vehicle I have ever owned.
I have had all the injectors out of it just to make it run at all!
It's good to drive when it goes, but otherwise it is a disgrace.

I will never own another TD5 engined vehicle, and as the Disco 3 models are trash from end to end, it looks like I will be looking for a good 300 tdi or a Toyota.

Thanks for the replies everyone, even if I didn't understand some of them..!!

However, reading between the lines it seems that the location / exposure to water of the ECU is the main concern, if this is waterproofed or moved to less insecure position would the improvemnet in drive quality not be worth it.....???

I suppose a Td5 would be quite comfortable for sitting in whilst your waiting for a tow home, It's your money my friend do with it what you will but we warned ya

The TD5 engine is the worst idea for an engine I have ever seen, and I've seen some horrors.

If you want to be put off all TD5 variants, study the fuel system, and get someone like me to explain how it works (when it does) and how many things are built in that can stop it working (which is frequently).

Mine is about 30k miles and a month warranty left, and I have had all the injectors out three times just to make it go. Penny copper washers under the injectors can leak gas into the fuel gallery in the head ..... end of journey.

Even to see a TD5 injector requires the stripping off of the top engine cam-cover.

No way go far from home in one of these ..... very dodgy ...
