My 2000 TD5 turbo is whistling a lot. Is this normal? As far as I know it’s the original. It has a standard exhaust and on tick over you can hear a whistle out the back. When driving it really hisses and drowns out most of the other noises. The turbo seems to be working ok and is very noticeable from about 1500 rpm onwards.

Is this a sign it’s on its way out?

Does it have a standard full exhaust, or a straight through because after taking out my middle box and taking the cat off it, mine whistles away quite happily

I had straight through one and changed it to a full standard one because it was too loud. Now all I can hear is the whistle and hiss of the turbo. Sounds cool actually but it is also a little down on power and I’m conscious that it might not be working correctly.

Is there a leak somewhere on the inlet or exhaust side?
It sounds like there is, but there isn’t. I had a split turbo hose before and it does sound the same. That wouldn’t explain the whistle from the exhaust on tick over though.

You can actually buy aftermarket impellers specifically to get a whistle. Quite the thing in the US pickup community
Check your impeller isn't chipped or bent, maybe? That seems to be where it originates from.

If it’s whistling at the rear loudly, either there’s something non standard in the system or your exhaust ‘silencers’ aren’t doing what they should

It’s a gentle whistle. It’s hardly noticeable when cold but it’s definitely noticeable when it’s hot. It wasn’t obvious with the straight through pipe.

I inspected the turbo closely before assembly and it looked fine. Nothing out of the ordinary. The previous owner was one to tinker so he may very well have done something like you mentioned. How would I know?

I suppose the only real way is check your impeller against an original and see if they differ. From what I've seen it's the angle of the vanes that get's the whistle. Alternatively, take it to a turbo specialist and see what they say.

Probably not worth the faff. I don’t mind the noise but I just don’t want to let go. I suppose I should ‘let it develop’!

Without wishing to teach Granny to suck eggs, when I thought mine was doing that it turned out to be a warped exhaust manifold.

Just saying, like. !
