I today fitted a straight through pipe onto my 2002 Defender 90 TD5, but when me and the family took it out for a test drive, we were all surprised at how much quieter it sounded under normal driving conditions.

It may have had more of a roar under heavy acceleration, but we're not 100% sure.

Has anyone else come across this? Is there any circumstance when a fully silenced exhaust would be louder than a straight through one?

I should mention that the cat is still fitted.

Cheers

Was the exhaust a genuine Land Rover one?

l had an aftermarket centre silencer fitted to my TD5 and it was really boomy. lf you tapped the silencer with a spanner it rang like a bell.

l changed it for a LR genuine one and the difference was significant. The genuine silencer made a dull thud when tapped with a spanner.

I think the silencer was genuine, and it makes a dull thud when I hit it with a trowel (no spanner handy!)

Perhaps it is louder now, but the noise is centered elsewhere instead of being centered on the big silencer (i.e. right under the cab). I may be clutching at straws here... :D

I added a straight thru centre pipe too on my TD5 and its also no louder than the standard box. Its cheaper than replacing with a new boxed centre as well. Then i added an ITG panel air filter and then i noticed more noise like intake roar but its not that loud and obtrusive at all. I like the way i can now hear the turbo spin up as a whistling noise. I also like losing the significant weight of the centre exhaust box too plus the straight thru pipe is stainless steel not cheap soft metal......

Just had Storm Tuning remap level 2 done and the exhaust sounds lovely when i have the windows open on my TD5 defender. It growls up hills now without any problem at all and is no longer a slow and under powered farm vehicle. Noise from the straight through centre box is not a problem at all and is no louder than standard with the centre silence in place. I have the straight through down pipe and centre and just a new mild steel rear pipe and box and ti sounds lovely to me.
The Storm remap seems to have made the tick over smoother and it now allows the boost to go higher too from 1 bar to 1.3 bar so i guess it means more grunt from the turbo . It was the simplest power upgrade i have ever done and from a very friendly and efficient company at a reasonable cost as well.
