Hi I have an 87 defender with td5 ( bought it this way).
Have not been using over winter it’s been standing a long time.
Recent Battery charged but initially when I tried to start dash lights came on and then went out so would not start.
Now will start fast but will only keep running if key turned and held in turned position, otherwise springs back and kills the engine. Almost like key not staying on if that makes sense.
Ignition switch newish. Any ideas please? Certainly electrical. Is there a relay that could cause this? ( fair bit of clicking in dash fuse box)
Also still getting original problem every other attempt so two related.
I’m thinking relay or poor corroded connection but I am not electrical so no idea where to start.

If it's really a Ninety or One Ten then it will be a bit harder for people to help as they don't know what has been done in the conversion.
If its a TD5 pretending to be a Ninety or One Ten it might be easier to diagnose.
Might be worth changing the ignition switch and key barrel 🤔
Welcome to the forum.

Hi A. I thanks for tip. Could be
ignition barrel. Playing round in the sun today managed to get key to stay in position twice so got her rolling again which was a relief. Ironically I had new ignition key and barrel only a few years back. Newest part on the Landy. I’ve got an old corvette as well and the key in that won’t turn after the winter! Landrover is a 90 but rebuilt on a galvanised chassis bought off eBay 17 years ago. It’s pretty well stock but it must have started out as something other than td5.

It's worth trying a new one for the cost.
Post a picture of your Landy, I would also like to see your Corvette.
Followed a new one today, thought it was a Lambo until I saw Corvette written across the back of it 😀

Hi will post pic as soon as I’ve worked out what to do - but mine is a 1970 convertible. Had someone think it was an e-type but was not a car guy. Back to the defender, seems there is a plastic part which houses all the electrical connections and these can come away from the key part. Looks like you can buy these as a small part if you don’t want to buy the whole ignition assembly. But think you need to remove the whole lot in any case to repair. So no saving in time. Thinking might as well replace the whole lot. Was looking for a retro starter button to replace the key on the steering column because I liked my series 2a button. When I do something I like to customise where I can. But not found one yet - at least one I like

Here is pic of C3. It’s 1970 and 5.7 litres. Been in family since 94. Belonged to my dad who loved corvettes and land rovers.

Actually it is good underneath - but needs total refurb in the cabin. Now the landy needs work and the c3 😬. Time to get busy!
