Whats the probable cause of screeching on a cold start-up?
I've heard it lots of cars, not just Defenders, it sounds like a belt, maybe the fan/timing belt or alternator belt? It has been doing it over the last week, since its been getting colder, might just be a coincidence though, for about 2/3 mins after starting, until the engine revs more than tick-over.
Is there a tensioner for the belt in question or are they self tensioners?
Any help would be great as it's driving me crackers!

try putting some talc on the belt before starting if this cures it for a while you need a new belt

You like using that pic dont you :D

My 200tdi was getting really bad for this the past few weeks and it was doing my head in. The belt was brand new but the alternator belt was in need of replacing. Replaced the alternator belt and sorted the tension on the fan belt and all is fixed.

fantastic, that would be a great help if he was'nt in a td5, that does'nt have a seperate alternator belt

I thought it only had one belt!! Thanks for the replies, it looks like it's slipping due to oil dripping onto the drive belt, I've not had time to have a good look at it yet, mainly because it's bloody freezin cold at the moment, but thats my best guess.
