Hello , my discovery 2 td5 manual has developed a whine in 5th gear between 60 and 70mph. I am due to tow a caravan to france in august and wondering if it will be okay. It drives great up upto 60 no noises etc, just when under power there is a whine. If i dip thecclutch it goes. I ll check the fluids on weekend.

It does sound like you have some wear somewhere, but if it were me, I would change all the oils: gearbox; transfer box and both diffs. and then decide. Also grease your propshaft U/j's.

You'll need 6 ltrs of EP 80-90 to GL5; 3 ltrs of MTF94.

One of my discos in the past had a very nasty whine coming from the tranny box when I bought it. Got it to my mate's place, was changing the oils as I suggested to you but when it came to the T-box I removed the sump plug and one drip of oil came out!!! It had bûgger all oil in.

Filled all the oils up, drove home approx 1000kms without a problem.

It got progressively quieter on the way home. Change the T-box oil again - no nasty bits there - and we used it for approx 2 years of general and towing work without any probs at all.

By the time we sold it the whining had all but disappeared.
