I have a 2003 Td5 hicab with 337K miles on it. Over a peroid time it has started to temporaly overheat. It happens when I've been travelling at an even speed on a dual carrage way at about 55 mph, often when towing a trailer. The trailer can be loaded or empty it makes no differance.
The temperature gauge will be at the normal place, and it will then suddenly shoot up into the red. The engine will loose power, the gauge will drop back to it's orginal position. The engine then carries on running as if nothing has happened. It happens so quickly I often don't see the gauge moving, but feel the engine's loss of power. Some times this happens repeatedly, others not, some times it doesn't happen for months. It never happens when driving on back roads. And very occasionly without the trailer on a long trip of 200 mile or so. However it is starting to happen more frequently. So far I have only replaced the temperature sensor, I also have a small coolant leak through the grub screw behine the exhaust manifold which only leaks when the engine is cold, this has been there for about 100k without getting any worse. I suspect an electrical issue any idea's?
