I have not been on here in a good while so apologies if this has been covered, I have a 2005 TD5 Defender, no throttle response, there is no tac in vehicle so I don’t know the rps, but after it gets going there is response (but not as good as it should be) I live in PNG Highlands lots of mountains, I carry heavy loads up to 1800 kgs. I use low ratio gearing to climb. Fuel pump was changed, clock has 225,000 filters fluids are changed more frequent then normal. Fuel rail wiring assembly changed. No oil ingress into ECU, major electrical issues when shipped from Africa to PNG, still working through issues. Rubber components dissolved fuses, relays, eng immobiliser changed. Workshops here cannot help. I am not a professional mechanic but have and can do most work. Any suggestions??

Does it rev up okay and normally when in neutral, is the problem only when pulling under load ?.
If it wont rev in neutral it could be the throttle pedal position sensor.

Hi, the problem is not just under load, but even empty, I have not tried to rev in neutral, but will and come back to you. I have removed the accelerator pedal sensor and cleaned with electrical contact cleaner, in fact I have removed several times all electrical connectors from air cleaner to acceleration pedal, even removed the ECU plugs (red&bkack) cleaned refitted. Disconnected both battery clamps and connected together pos to neg cables for twenty min. Still no improvement.

A Hawkeye or Nanocom will allow you to check the electrical response of the accelerator and diagnose the issue. If you haven't got one already it would be an excellent investment, particularly as you are somewhat off the beaten track.

I had a Hawkeye but it’s went down the tubes am looking at getting a new one. Some history here, I order all my parts from wipers to filters everything from the UK, pay courier and duty and still come right compared to dealers here. The mechanics here are basic but no flash. I spent three weeks in 2015 with the dealer, the UK tech support to recode the ECU. Someone mentioned to me the ECU might be the issue?? But like you said a diagnostic test is cheaper then guess work.

It’s likely the pedal is faulty, it happened on mine.
Have you changed the injector harness? And try disconnecting the MAF and see if it’s any better.

Am not sure if your reference to the (pedal being faulty) meaning the actual pedal acceleration or the electrical plug connection (sensor) positioned at the pedal? Pls qualify

G’day to All,
I wanted to give an update, I tested acceleration at idle and there seemed to be good response, therefore I removed the airflow sensor to the air flow, then removed the maf sensor cleaned with electrical contact cleaner, refitted, removed sensor plug at accelerator cleaned refitted and took a test drive (no cargo) but had 6 occupants. The vehicle pulled and responded much better (not like new) but a major increase in throttle response and power that I have not felt in months of driving. I do feel it’s in my interest to replace all the sensors though and get a Hawkeye, unless someone has better ideas.
I am at the corner of the world here, the (used to be dealer) for Land Rovers has stopped importing and besides the landys coming into PNG are Korean made, under Lic.
I am the only chap here with a TD5.

Replacing all the sensors might be a bit of overkill - BUT, given where you are in the world .... you'd always have the old ones as potential spares :)

In terms of diagnostics - I agree completely that you need some - I have a Hawkeye, but, in the period since I bought this, things have moved forward somewhat - so, I'd suggest starting a new thread on which one you should get ..... The Hawkeye Total ( or somesuch name ), for example, covers more than the original Hawkeye IIRC ..... Then there's the Lynx doodah, and .....;)
