TD5 Dipstick

Can someone advise me on oil capacity difference between dry dipstick and top mark? 04 110 TD5. This morning my oil light came on and i checked the level to find no sign of oil.....(possibly makes me the dipstick for not checking it sooner) I added about 3 litres and now it is way above top mark??? Also, someone suggested the oil light is triggered by low level as well as low pressure. Is this correct?
I don't mind being a muppet, but i want to learn by my mistakes.

The excess oil needs draining out PDQ. The procedure for topping up is add small quantities and keep checking the level.

the oil light comes on just due to low pressure cos it's a simple pressure switch... but if the level is very low then off course the pressure will drop too.

and take the advice from above and drain out the excessive oil

Thanks guys, sound advice. needless to say the xs oil was drained stright away. 20:20 hindsight is great, but at 6 am in the peshing rain rushing for a ferry, lets just say my mind wasn't on the job and i misjudged the quantity - but it did raise the question how much is enough? More haste, less speed - i got the next ferry.

My old boss nevel looked after his Td5 or any other vehicles come to that!!

I checked the level one morning out of interest and there was nothing on the dip stick - told the boss and went off to get some oil for him - almost 4 litres later it was back up to full - god knows how long it had been running like that but he did mention something about a red light flickering every now and then!!!!
