I have just collected a low mileage (125,000) td5 110 defender, why does it always play up just after your hard earned money has changed hands and not before

the old owner did say to give it some revs before starting but it was starting first spin

we collected from London and as there was only a small amount of fuel in the tank and we had 100 mile journey we filled up fuel, I have always been a fan of totally filling up, doing this fuel leaked from the top of the tank
only journey home was faultless and the engine ran well

But now it winds over 15 20 seconds before it starts

any ideas

cheers

someone has had the pump out and refitted the securing ring and seal badly id think, the main issues are pump, injector washers and o rings ,air bleed valve wjn500110

agree with the pump out statement.

Try doing the fuel pump prime before starting to see if its a fuel issue. With the ignition on press the throttle pedal up and down 5 times quickly. The pump will then start running with the engine ecu flashing. It will run about 30sec and stop, amd do this about 5 times.
then try starting. If it starts 1st time you have a issue with the fuel system.
keep an eye on the engine oil level and check it doesn't smell of diesel. If it does stop using it immediately

It may be just pulling air in from one of the pipes on top of the pump while stopped overnight, and then when you try starting next day or after a long period of shut down it takes a long time to prime, and this could have been the cause of fuel spill, check for kinked split fuel pipes on top of fuel tank.
