The clutch on my 05 TD5 Defender has gone. I’ve been quoted, on a worse case scenario of needing slave and master cylinders, a price of £1600. Is this really what they cost to supply and fit?

Does that include a new DMF?

Valeo dmf and clutch kit 750 quid ebay, slave and master will be less than a ton, trade prices most likely less.
I would hazard a guess less than a days work for a tech who knows what they are doing.

It’s a real worst case scenario, if it needs everything, including a new dmf. I’m guessing it would probably be a few hundred quid less if it doesn’t need the slave and master cylinders.

I don't see how a master cylinder has any relevance.
My son was getting quoted about £1K for a 200tdi and clutch kit is considerably cheaper.

If the car is reatively rust/mud/crud free then taking the transfer box and gearbox off takes a few hours.
They may be able to slide it back ??
Clutch is relatively easy/quick to remove/refit at this point.
If a new flywheel is needed another 1/2 hour for that.
Starting @ 08:30 it should be at this stage by 12:30

If things don't need cleaning up prior to reassembly then it should all be back together by 14:30 and the inside, floors, covers, carpets etc back in by 4pm.

8 hours @ £60/hr + vat = £576
Probably £900 to £1000 at a main stealer, maybe more.

£800 for bits (non JLR, ie Valeo etc) - you could get blue box stuff from the likes of Craddocks/JGS4X4 etc and save a £150 ?
You could go for a Single Mass flywheel and clutch (avoid LOF) and save £2/300 in parts....
(Note: I wouldn't reccommend it though)

New bolts/odds-n-sods £25
G/T Box Oils (may as well) £65

£1200 to £1800 at a guess.
Single Mass £875 to £1400

All estimates.
No I don't want to do it for you.
Good luck.
