Well guys it is now 1 year on ,on 100% bio use(quality homebrew).
People ask what mods have you done?
Answer: press button on dash to open filler,unscrew cap and pour in.

Just had MOT done which it failed on headlight aim and handbrake adjustment,but a bit hard to blame on bio!

The emmisions tests came out as follows:

Oil temp 64 c
Peak 1 = 2.61
Peak 2 = 1.72
Peak 3 = 2.51


Zero drift = 0.07

Average 2.21

MoT Test Result
Turbo = 2.21 m-1 PASS

These figures look high for bio,but nothing to compare with as first test on TD5 on bio.
How do you guys fare on Dino Diesel?

Also not changed fuel filter since last July-so maybe needs doing/might improve values.

No problems so far,bought the TD5 early last May and put it immediately on its bio life.Changed fuel filter in July for best practice.Slight hesitation y'day driving back from MOT,so I will change it again.
One thing you do notice on bio,is how clean the sump oil stays.Changed oil and filters two weeks ago(500 miles) and on checking level before MOT,the oil is still transparent,and slightly smoked grey colour-none of that black stuff.
Do you have any old MOT emissions for derv?Interested to compare figures.Previously non turbo engines and even my 300 tdi came out much lower as low as 1/3rd the limit or lower.The TD5 is chipped though,maybe this makes a difference.Also EGR is blanked,but still fitted and not cleaned inlet manifold yet .Removed MAP sensor for cleaning last summer and it was caked in black tar/goo,so manifold prob similar

hi,no i do not have any old mot's as it is away having the chassis changed over.it sounds like you have got it well sorted now.it would have been good to see if it would be as good if it had not been chipped.;)
 
I would expect it to have been even lower on the emissions,I once put a 106 thru MOT on bio and the readings were so low,the guy thought his instrument was bust and did a 4th reading up another cars exhaust to check.See if I can dig out the old MOT-3 readings approx zero and then a 4th reading more like the readings I got y'day.This is why I am questioning the results.(I didn't see the test done y'day,and wonder if it is my emissions)
 
Just to make it clear,I am using true biodiesel-Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (F.A.M.E.),not just veg oil.
Biodiesel (FAME) is processed for veg or animal oil.
I would not risk std veg oil in my TD5-too thick
 
i had a injection pump re built by a respected fuel injection specialist(Diesel Bob), he asked if I was going to be running it on Bio in the future as the standard seals in Lr pumps get eaten by the stuff, if you are using it, he recommends a different set of seals

You're quite right Johnlad,Viton seals are the seals of choice for running bio.
Most injection pumps built to take ulsd(ultra low sulphur diesel) are already built with Viton or equivalent ,as pump failure due to seals being incompatible with ulsd was very common when it first came in.And manufacturers had to respond.
I have no idea whether mine are in fact viton or not,but I factor that in and accept the risk-I am just hoping that my 1999/2000 TD5 ES has this fitted,but should it fail,I will have it rebuilt with Viton.
My bio vs diesel savings are large,a gallon of my bio costs me 69p ,a gallon at the pump must be £6.00-£7.00,so I have money in hand should something fail.I am hoping as the TD5 is a high pressure fuel system,it will have been built out of quality components.
Why did your pump need rebuilding?
My old 300 tdi also 100% bio use ,did lose the drive end I/P seal,which I replaced with Viton(from dieselBob) and gave no issues after , when it went the bio noshed the cambelt as well-luckily I had no other damage .That was my only issue in 4 or 5 yrs of bio use,and Britpart lift pump failure-but they seem poor on any fuel

it was a 200tdi pump i am referring to, I know its a totally different pump than td5, but worth bringing to people's attention, it was re built as it had developed a leak

What sort of mpg are you achieving? And torque? How much weaker/stringer is it vs conventional diesel?

I don't think there is any noticeable difference,bio is a better lubricant than dino diesel,it has a higher cetane value(already has oxygen available on the fuel molecule)-hence much cleaner emissions,bio has a longer burn cycle than dino so none of that diesel "crack" so engine is considerably quieter,and will probably last longer as less stress on big ends and piston crowns.
I use it as my daily drive,and in very heavy stop start traffic it deffo burns more than the 300 tdi did-probably around 20 mpg-but on a Motor way run I get figures nearer 30 mpg.It is an auto as well.
But I don't help as I love its performance and acceleration and am heavy with the right foot .Can beat most cars away from the lights and joining 30 mph traffic from a junction is not a problem-tramps the wheels in the wet,and traction control kicks in-my 300 tdi,never did anything like this .
I did once compare my 300 tdi disco on bio against a mates 300 tdi defender along a duel carriageway-he overtook me at 70 mph -I put my foot down and just overtook him(and pulled away)going uphill-I seemed to just have the edge over him.( not prepared to print our final speed)All in all I would say there was no real difference

I do not add anything like redex,it doesn't need the cetane number increased as it is already higher than derv.In winter I only use liquid oil feedstock,and I also add 5% misfuel(unknown blend of petrol and diesel) to my bio,and cold filter to 2 microns,prior to putting in tank.

Very helpful guys(including some other TD5 pioneers).

But I must point out making bio can be dangerous,you are using nasty poisonous chemicals,and it takes time to perfect your process.It also takes some time and effort,to make it.It is not for everyone

ok thanks,i will not be making my own,just interested to see how it is done,correctly.:)
