Chock the wheels
2 jacks on chassis(can use axle stands set at same height)
1 jack nose of diff.

Or remove back axle using axle stands on chassis.
Gives more room for the top bolts.

Normally it’s just the ball joint that needs changing

Good luck

The big nut at the axle end can be a bit of a pig. If you're replacing this joint I'd start with the idea that you will cut/grind it off. Once the A frame is disconnected at the axle end, it will just unbolt (rusty fittings permitting) from the chassis mounts.

My ball joint bolt came off pretty much ok managed to get a socket on it.
Try to fix the axle so it cant move at all or putting the frame back will be a pig, take care to put the bolts through the bushes the correct way (only applies if you take the brackets off the chassis) clean and paint the chassis brackets they are pretty expensive to replace, paint up the new ball joint bracket with waxoil to try and make the job easy next time.

Buy all new bolts. Cut all the old ones off, ive done 3 and never managed to get the big nuts off!!

Buy a new full balljoint in the fulcrum, not much more expensive but huge time saver. Gwyn do a nice wide angle one with a grease nip.

Ratchet strap the axle in place too

Wheels on the ground?
Axle stands under Axle?
Can you get a socket onto the balljoint? or do you have the take the plate to axle off (4 bolts) ?

TD5 different cos of tank?

I am replacing everything, arms ball joint the lot!

Cant get a socket in. Have to use a big ass spanner. As james said smash it off with a cold chisle. Drill a hole.first make it a touch easier.

Yeah wheels on ground. Chocked. Handbrake in gear etc...

Seems as though I've done mine all wrong then, 200Tdi 90 so could be different. Only did it as had the rear body and tub off to work on the chassis and thought it would be a good idea to do it while access was easy, as it happens it seems as if it was ok but did it anyway. Chocked the front wheels, back up and on axle stands, rear wheels off, then just took it all off.
Big spanner to undo the big nut, bit of heat on the mounting and then a couple of sharp taps with an old bolt as a drift, came out easy. Not so easy was getting the big bolts out of the upper ends of the arms, just had to work at it, came free eventually with spanner and socket and breaker bar.
Didn't even try to undo the 3 bolts on the brackets, just cut up through the bolt end and nut with a 1mm slitting disk, tap with chisel and everything was off ready for a clean up, primer coat last thing today.
Just hope everything goes back together OK, will get plenty of coppercoat on everything even though I am replacing all bolts.
