Hi, at present i own a disco 300tdi, which the wife won't drive, so i am thinking about buying a freelander td4, 03ish. i would like to know what owners think of them in regard to reliability, how well they perform in snow, and can u fit a lift kit to give them a bit of clearance. cheers, hairy.

If you plan on plenty of snow/mud then auto is better...T/C makes it excellent on anything slippy. Lifts are easy to fit and cheap enough I have 50mm lift with 215/80/15s giving overall lift of approx 4"

I have a td4 auto and do about 30k miles a year in it. don't want to tempt fate but so far all I've suffered is a split intercooler hose which was £28 from the main dealer and about 1/2 to fit myself.

There are good ones and bad ones, service history being the key, but mine still makes driving a pleasure be it in town or open road

ive got a split intercooler hose at the minute but being a weekend cant get another . does anyone know of a supplier who does silicone ones as i have heard they a better.

The Freelander Club have a special deal with the manufacters of silicon hoses. Might save you some cash...

My tuppence worth:

Freelander is excellent on snow and slippery surfaces. The traction control gives it true "four wheel drive" when you compare it to to the Discovery which has a locking centre diff, which will still allow two wheels to spin.

Our TD4 has done 66k miles with no break downs and the only mechanical problems was a problem with the windscreen wiper which was sorted in 10 minutes.

They have the same wheelbase as the Discovery and ground clearance isn't as miserly as you might think - a 50mm/2" lift gives the same ground clearance as a standard Defender!

just been to landrover for the standard intercooler pipes , viper emailed me back this morning they havent got a mould for the freelander yet so ill check out the freelander club and get some silicon ones aswell . also got the depresion valve filter kit to fit just for piece of mind. i dont know whether anyone else has seen the , what looks like an inline fuel filter that just hangs about at the back of the airbox i asked at landrover and he says its supossed to be there.

It not an extended breather from auto box???...I know quite a few peoplw who have extended and stuck in line fuel filter in just to keep crap out.

i think the little filter you are on about is the vacuum pipework filter, its located just above the turbo,

clever ole john is correct its an open ended vacuum filter [sucks air in ] the gearboxes on 200-2003 if you orft road is good to extend the g/box breather and fit the same type er filter with an extension [saves gettin water un ****e int g/box]
