A couple of days ago while driving up hill the engine management light came on the car seemed to loose power and smoke heavily. Once I hit level ground the car seemed to correct itself. The next morning the car turned over along time before starting it did this for for the next couple of morning and then today it just turned over without firing. Hopefully someone could point me in the right direction of what the problem could be. It’s a 06 plate with 134k on the clock.

Cheers

That's interesting, a friend of mine had a Freelander diesel retro-fitted to his Rover 75 last year, is now having the same starting problem & can only get the thing to fire by using Easy-start. Once started the car runs fine.

Its nearly always a fuel problem if its turning over unless battery is low and its not turning over quickly enough to give the compression required to fire it up, is there plenty of fuel in the tank, can you hear the pump running, is your fuel filter ok, are you getting fuel to the filter, are you getting fuel to the injectors.
Also check your air filter.
