Hi All

I have a freelander TD4. Its on a 51 plate and I have some serious starting issues. It has been running perfect starting first time until 2 weeks ago when it decided not to start at all. My mechanic has changed the glow plugs, the fuel filter and it has just had a new fuel tank fuel pump installed. He has run a diagnostic check which has revealed no fault codes. The car starts with that easy start jollop and when running runs like a dream but when the engine stops it wont start again.

He is now baffled and I was wondering if anyone here has had the same or a similar problem and they could shed any light on it please? As I say, no smoke and runs perfect once started, very frustrating. PLEASE HELP!!!!:(

The problem is nearly sure to be a injector that is leaking back. How to test is to remove the covers take off the return pipes off the top of the injectors and turn on ignition. It should take about 8 seconds before you see fuel coming out of the top of the injector, if it take less than 8 seconds then that is the faulty injector and only option is new injector, you may find a problem with more than one.
With out to much detail you do not get sufficient cranking pressure due to leaking injector for the engine to fire. Using easy start fires the engine allowing the high pressure pump to work and as that runs a 28000 psi it delivers fuel faster than the leaking injector and will run like a dream until you switch off and bingo will not fire again

I think he has already checked the other fuel pump...I am seeing him today for an update (I hope) so will keep you all posted. Thanks all.....

Thanks to everyone for the wisdom. My chap has checked the injectors and it would seem I have one leaky one which needs replacing. He seems unsure that this will solve the problem however and seems to think the car should misfire which it isnt. Would one injector being faulty stop the engine from starting? Thanks all...

When one of my injectors started dieing it did'nt stop the engine starting completely but it did sound like a bag of sh*te when first turned over. Once started it ran fine. It steadily got worse and after 4 weeks ( I was in Norfolk on hols ) took it to the garage and they put a new injector in ( not cheap :( ) Fixed it immediately.:D

The injectors on a TD4 freelander are electronic and controled by the CPU, on the common rail there is a pressure sensor, when cranking it delivers aprox 1200 psi. If the cpu senses less pressure than this it will not open the injectors. Once the engine fires then the cpu senses that the rpm has incresed and tell the high pressure pump to deliver the 28000 psi and no problem with the faulty injector. So the leaking injector prevents the rail from pressurising so will not fire. Its not like the old mecanical timed systems which would give a miss fire, hope this helps

My mechanic has now changed the faulty injector and still my car wont start!!!! Apart from burning it out for insurance purposes does anyone have any more ideas? Is it time I braved it and took the thing to Land Rover for special diagnostics? This problem is getting expensive....
