td4 smoking, rough idle when cold and cutting out

hi all,

I have a freelander TD4 2003 and when i was driving home i felt a thud and my engine management light came on, since then im getting rough start up and smoking quite bad, when i rev the engine on cold start i get lots of smoke and engine cuts out but once driven for 10mins and engine temp is up it runs fine but fumy for about 3miles then cuts out but manage to re-start right away each time.
Any ideas as its been to 2 garages and cant figure it out.
1 garage said it might be the hp fuel pump but would that no make it hard to start or at all?

only thing I'm getting with diagnostics is fuel pressure fault and fuel rail sensor fault.

possable thud caused by intercooler pipe de-laminating and collapsing causing lack of air flow then engine light and lots of black smoke.

hi turns out it was fuel contamination caused by last owned putting dodgy diesel in it, he changed the fuel pump before i bought it no wonder it fecked up on him, argyle diesels in east kilbride found that my fuel regulator was completely caked in deposits.
so full fuel system was flushed and car is running great with loads of power now.

My land rover td4 2004 would cut-out when idle but would re-start fine. Brought to garage and diagnostics says nothing significant, except he'd bled the fuel line saying possible air.After 2 days, it cuts-out again but able re-start. I've already had the egr valve and maf sensor cleaned but to no avail. Please help! Two garage can't figure it out.
