Hi my wife's freelander 1 2005 td4 facelift is running rough on start up. There is some white smoke as well when just started. Breather has been replaced.

I put it on the Hawkeye and as suspected the injectors seem to be way out from each other.

Cylinder 1 = 1.7mm3
Cylinder 2 = -0.9mm3
Cylinder 3 = -2.7mm3
Cylinder 4 = 1.2mm3

previously (a week ago) cylinder 2,3 and 4 were around -0.9 and cylinder 1 was 3.4.
high pressure rail is27659kPa
low pressure is 381kPa
Manifold 100.7kPa
Airflow 508 mg/srtk

As said I suspect the injectors to be at fault but which ones? And is 1 at the front of the engine or at the rear?

No.1 is at the timing end, the right-hand side as you sit in the driver's seat.

What about a simple injector drop test while it's running rough? Unplug one at a time and see which one doesn't affect the idle.

Also check glow plugs are all getting power at key on, and measure resistance to ground - about 1 ohm.

Balance is a relative measure, of course, so I can't really comment on your figures. If you're having trouble then I suggest getting all four reconditioned as they're better balanced all together.

Cheers, I should have done drop test, so good thinking. I will do that.

I have an extra set of injectors so I think I get them refurbished and put them in.

Thanks a million!!

Well, glow plugs first as they are much cheaper and easier.

If you do get your injectors refurbished, let us know where and how much. I've always wondered about those mail-order companies on line.

I say I will go somewhere local, they quoted me 30 euro per injector before (I live in Ireland)

I saw the glow plugs were really cheap. Think I will do the lot while the weather is nice. LOL

White smoke on starting as most likely to be glow plugs. White after it's running smoothly but still cold, is likely to be steam.
Use a decent injector cleaner for a few hundred miles before condemning the injectors.

Thanks, We tried injector cleaner and that is not doing it. The smoke is only on start up and stops when it is running for a few minutes.

What does the white smoke smell of?

Which injector cleaner did you use. I've found that Comma Diesel Magic is about the best, readily available treatment. I put a dose in monthly on my TD4.

It doesn't smell sweet, it smells a bit sooty if that makes sense?

We use redex on a regular basis, we have tried a more aggressive cleaner of which I forgot the name.
I have also put a liter of petrol into the diesel once.

:eek::eek::eek: By accident I hope. Petrol can be a killer to the common rail fuel system.

I'd be changing the glow plugs before delving deaper;)

What was the out come if any to this situation, so many owners never come back and report if they sorted out the problem ?

Injector clean didn't help, issue is still persisting.

I have other injectors, orings and washers to put in but the wife got hit in the back by a van. That stopped the work on the car for a bit.
