Freelander 1 Td4 non start, please help

Hi guys, new to this forum please bear with me,

I bought a 2003 td4, which isnt revving past 3000, only smoke is on start up, once warm no smoke at all, ive change all glow plugs, gave a full service including breather filter, turbo vent filter, new inlet manifold and her valve, replaced all vaccumm pipes, but still doing the same, very lumpy until warm, but was advised to unplug fuel rail sensor and see if that makes a difference, so did that it wouldnt fire up, plugged it back in and still will not fire just turns over, any ideas would be appreciated.

Can you hear the fuel pump (n/s/r wheel arch) when you turn the ignition on

Hi, certainly can, first thing I checked, its just very strange, it would start fine before I unplugged fuel pressure sensor, all I get is p1260 code, reading pre-fuel rail pressure sensor. I find it strange that just unplugging it would cause it to stop working.

usually fuel filter .. and .. or .. low press. fuel pump failing

fuel rail pressure sensor

make sure it's 100% clean .. i.e. the plug-socket contacts
runs from millivolts up to 5v .. small bit of dirt etc causes running /starting issues
( and that plug is known to have potential water ingress issues )

with some experiments .. turning the engine off for 15min .. the on again .. can help
i.e. the ecu will know if the fuel rail plug has been disconnected ..

maybe a bit of grime on the plug moved ..
as it were disconnected and reinserted again ..

Ive cleaned the plug and sensor with electrical contact cleaner, it tried to start but then died, I have a new fuel filter I will fit that tomorrow see what happens, ive read about this wiring repair to that sensor, which this one has not been done yet, so might get that done tomorrow too

I have a 2005 TD4 and had starting problems so replaced the low pressure pump and fuel filter, my problem turned out to be failing injectors. I was told that when the low pressure pump wears it can pass minute metal shavings into the fuel and this is possibly what did for my injectors. It may be wise to replace your pump as well as the filter. It is a lot cheaper than injectors.
