Hi all, new to the forum as bought TD4 2003 today. There is a noise that I did not pick up on test drive - when accelerating from low revs, at around 1500rpm there is a noise like a cylinder is not firing, although power and smoothness do not seem to be affected - it sounds like an old diesel would. It goes as the revs pick up, is there anything that would cause a misfire. The engine sounds fine at tickover and higher revs, although I did notice a slight hesitation when pressing the accelerator in neutral from tickover. I don't think it is anything mechanical as it changes depending on the accelerator position, I am guessing at injection timing. Any ideas?

Mine does it with only 800miles on the clock between 1300-1500rpm, sounds like a thrum noise, I was thought it may go with miles?

Sorry, I meant Diesel knock rather than a banging noise. It is a clatter, like an old ford diesel sound. I have just started it from cold and as when warm, it sounds really nice ticking over and revving up when stationary, very quiet indeed. the clatter comes in each gear when around 1500rpm. It sounds as though a cylinder isn't firing properly, but power and smoothness is okay??

Take it back to where you bought and get it checked out, if your power and smoothness is ok I wouldn't think it's an injector problem.

Hi all, the problem has developed more now into a definite misfire which is evident when revving in neutral. Main stealer said sounds like an injector leaking. How easy is it to remove the injectors, are they kept in by the 8mm nuts either side? Could it be anything else?

You can do it as long as you are handy with spanners and have all the new bits ready to back. They are held in by the two nuts but if I remember you need a torx socket to take the stud out as well. Garage will have to check which one is duff, unless you are changing all of them.

On the Freelanderowners.com forum there is an horror story regarding all this, it's edited by Aussie Scotty. (Do a search on aussie scotty or so and see what he opened up as I can't recall the thread title). Worth to read I think.

I have a 3003 TD4 which had a similar problem at around 1600 RPM. As you went up to about 2000rpm the vibration noise seemed to dissapear. The noise was more noticeable if you were accelerating up a hill sometimes in 2nd gear. The vibration could also be seen through the Gear stick if under load.
I complained a lot to landrover and eventually there was a modification to the damping of the gear box(or transmission) that resolved the issue. From my memory it involved replaceing one of the rubbers with a re-designed one. Check with the landrover dealers the detail.

Hope its not nr 1 injector cos if the windscreen washer tube has split and spilt fluid all over it you won't get it out, result new head, 4 new injectors and a £3000.00 (yes that is right) bill. I suggest you get the garage to sort it quick !!!

Yep Chris is reet the longer the injectors are in =less chance er getting them oot. . .recomend soaking in penertration for a week if 20,000 + miles. . .and best er luck. . .:) :) :)
