so, i've located the knocking noise on the freelander finally!
the bearing in the gearbox, where the front left hand side (passenger) driveshaft fits.
Bearing and seal both knackered unfortunately.
whats the best coarse of action? is it a straight forward job the split the gearbox and replace the bearing and seal? or would that be something for a professional?
replace the whole gearbox with a 2nd hand one?
im more than capable with the spanners but i've never split a gearbox off a car before (done many motorcycles, but thinking a car is a whole different ball game).
anyone had experience of splitting the gearbox on a td4?
cheers fella's

Cheers fella,
looks like im just gonna have to pull the gearbox out and just have a go, cant find any information about splitting the gearbox anywhere!
but its not like i can ruine it any more, if im already looking at a 2nd hand box, i might as well have a crack at replacing the faulty bearing :D

I suspect I will have to be doing this soon as I am getting an odd noise I think from the box.

I noticed on ebay its possible to buy a complete kit of all bearings and oil seals for about 180 quid.....thats a fair chunk of money, (could buy a used box for not much more) but I suppose it makes sense to do everything while its in bits - would be a pain if it needed something else doing a few month later.
