TD4 Engine breather filter & valve assy

Anyone know if the TD4 engine breather filter needs changing as part of the service interval? It doesn't seems to get a mention in the Haynes manwell but I recall reading somewhere it should be changed.

are you talking the one that feeds into that air filter from the rocker or the cone one on the pipe at the rear of the engine? i do both, always

Yes it does, land rover introduced it into the service schedule about a year ago.

You'll know when it needs changing.............pull out the dipstick with the engine running, if oil pours from the dipstick tube then its blocked.

After fitting mine i had a look at the old one, Its the rubber diaphram inside that stuck to the top of the plastic casing so it didn't move/do anything, You should be abale to make it move by blowing/sucking on the hole on the top of the casing

i did read somwhere that if the breather /filter gets blocked it can cause oil starvation to the turbo, , not sure how true it is, (was on a turbo repair site ), but for £40 is it worth taking that chance ,

£40?????

Shouldn't cost anywhere near that... I paid about £20 from a main stealer and it took me about 15 minutes to do.

It wont cause oil starvation to the turbo. What happens is, when it blocks, the excess pressure in the crankcase will push the oil past the seals in the turbo and fill the exhaust and intercooler with oil, this will eventually kill the bearings in the turbo followed by the engine if the engine is allowed to run out of oil.

Has anyone got any instructions on changing the valve and filter? I fancy a go at doing it myself but would feel better if I had a bit of advise before I go and mess it up. Please let me know if you can help, I'd be really thankfull.
