Went to change the crankcase breather filter on the TD4 on Sunday.
Removed the casing only to be greated by nothing...

No filter installed. Probably been running for the last 8K miles without one. Installed new seals and a Land rover element (will upgrade to the BMW one at some point).

I can see a couple of spots on the air filter so that will be replaced, but is there anything else which can suffer if these filters are omitted?

Car seems fine, maybe a little lumpy on start up with a bit of white smoke immediately on start, but clears within 5-10 seconds. No power delivery issues.

Why would someone not install the filter?

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks for the suggestions fellas but no, it wasn't the BMW upgrade unit.

The land rover oem filter went straight in to the void.

There was nothing installed. Just a big gap where the filter should have been. I didn't remove anything (except the seals - I renewed them) and just installed the new filter element.

Did you still have the plastic insert that locates the filter or had the previous owner also removed with the old filter ? if not then you need to buy the insert.

May work out cheaper, if the insert has been left out, to buy the BMW mod @ £24.

Strange I read that before somewhere.

I also have a 2005 Td4 and I didn't have to make a new groove to place it. Fitted perfect.
When I tried to fit the new insert it wouldn't enter the housing, the groove in the insert was about 1/4" out of line with the housing. Not a problem making a new locating groove as it's only very thin plastic.

Well, if bu 'insert' you mean 'filter, then yes it appears to have simply been left out.

The filter would only go in one way and located into rings on the top and bottom halves of the housing assembly.

It just struck me as odd that it was missing and I'm now a tad concerned as to why someone would go to all the trouble of removing the filter and then not re-install it.

And just what the consequences are of not running with a filter for a given amount of time, no-one can actually tell me, so for now, I'll assume all is ok :p

I will probably replace the Land rover filter with the BMW one at next service.

This BMW engine suffers from turbo failure often associated with a blocked crankcase breather, you need the black plastic insert to keep the cloth type filter in the correct position unless you have fitted the BMW mod.

Right.

This is getting frustrating. So whoever removed the original filter also removed a locating insert too. When I track down who serviced this last, I'm going to tear them somewhere new to **** out of.

I'm going to go buy the BMW filter assy now...

cheers fellas!

Hi all daft question can you fit the new type filter in a 2000 is the housing the same and is it an easy job to fit thanks

Hi,

The likely answer as to the 'missing' filter may be that someone opened it up and found it was too dirty to clean - so they chucked it!

Everyone who has fitted the BMW cyclone vortex upgraded part has got an old style filter retaining clip spare as you don't need it for the plastic BMW job.

Some of the housings seem to have a bit inside that means you have to file or cut a slot in the BMW part so that it fits properly.

Part number for BMW is B11.12.7.799.367 and they call it an 'Oil Separator' not a filter on the box. Comes with all the gaskets and rubber 'O' ring.

Cost £23.35 inc. VAT

Thought I'd just put all the info in one post.

Have fun in the snow by the way - I haven't had so much as one snow-flake. :(

Cheers,
Singvogel.

Just fitted the BMW mod on my 56 plt and like Nickcc had to cut a new groove for it to fit. Had a problem with one of the torq screws holding the unit down, had to tap an allen key in to loosen it.
