I have tried using the search facility, but it is not working for me. I just get a blank page with an error message.

I am planning to flush my coolant and renew it in my 06 TD4.

I assume it is just a case of taking a radiator bottom hose off and then running clean water through the system via the expansion bottle?
I have a bottle of cleanser I might use too.

I am hoping this will increase the heat output until I can replace the thermostat. Too cold to be fiddling with that at the moment.

Here's what I did recently:

1. Remove bottom hose and drain.
2. Flush rad backwards and forwards with hosepipe.
3. Refit bottom hose.
4. Remove heater matrix hoses and flush backwards and forwards. Refit.
5. Undo bleed screw and fill system with water.
6. Run engine until warmish (better drive it - idle takes ages).
7. With engine still running, open expansion tank to relieve pressure, detach small coolant reservoir return hose and aim into bucket.
8. Keep topping up expansion tank with water until return runs nice and clear.
9. Drain at bottom hose again. Refit pipe.
10. Open bleed screw and pour 3.6 litres OAT coolant (pink) into expansion tank.
11. Top up to level with water, closing bleed screw when necessary.
12. Run engine to temp again and check over.

Best to do this with heater control knob set to hot.

Thanks.

One question....

7. With engine still running, open expansion tank to relieve pressure, detach small coolant reservoir return hose and aim into bucket.

I assume this small return hose is the one that goes to the expansion bottle?

Long-winded, I know, but just draining at the bottom hose won't flush the whole system, and doing it this way will, I think, ensure you have the recommended 50% coolant concentration. Keep in mind you'll lose some coolant (and your temper) when changing the thermostat.

I won't be changing the thermostat until we have warmer weather. Much too cold to do it at the moment.

It needs doing as the thermo has become very lazy.
It hasn't failed completely, but takes an age to get to about 5 to 12 position and only rises to 12: 0 clock position (briefly) when the car is under extra load, such as going up a steep hill or moving at 70 plus.
It takes a good 17 miles or so now to get what I consider decent heat.
Luckily at this time of year, I wear thermals as I work outdoors mainly.

I might not have responded in time, but if u have an auxilliary diesel heater, which mine does with the same model as yours, it should help get up to operating temp? Or maybe im mistaken and it does not get hot enough to help fl1 reach optimal temp with defect thermostat👍

You’ve replied to an old thread…

In this case, almost 2 years ago, so very unlikely he/she will see your reply!

The F1 td4 has a commen issue whereby the stat fails open, and so does not let the coolant get hot enough to give good heat. There is a work around for this, by fitting an inline stat and leaving the original in place 😉

Didn’t know this, thanks!
