Wife's car previously ( early this year) had HDC light coming on intermittently, so ordered a replacement switch but never fitted it because after cleaning the wires the fault went away.

Fast forward to today, and she's now getting F4 fault & HDC permanently on. Waiting for he to come home so I can check all the usual suspects properly & not at side of the road !!. (shift cable, auto fluid, electrical connections, etc)

Question: There seems to be two switches on the brake pedal bracket ? The upper one looks like the newer style switch with 4-pin connector, but there's also a 3-pin switch in the lower position, which does not seem to want to come out ? As far as I can see, both are connected into the loom.

Update:
  • Removed brake switch & tested. It did seem slightly intermittent, but squirted contact cleaner inside. After a few mins the operation seemed more reliable, but will replace just in case. HDC & F4 issue still present.
  • Adjusted shifter cable, although it did seem to be in correct position. HDC & F4 issue still present.
  • Unplugged the two transmission multiplugs to check resistances.
    • All solenoids & sensors seem to be about correct, but strangely all the solenoid & sensor readings were about 0.5 ohm too high. All sensors measured about 0.5 ohm high as well ??
    • These were with meter ohms range zeroed, so not the leads.
  • Finally cleaned the two connectors and re-plugged them a couple of times. HCD & F4 cleared !!

Also figured out the lower switch is actually a sensor, but adjusted its position just in case. Note: RAVE shows the two swapped around. The sensor is at the bottom, and switch at the top (at least on our FL1). RAVE section attached in case it helps someone.

Also on the newer switches, the plunger must be depressed to allow the blue collar to rotate.

Well done and an extra point for putting 'solved' in the title!!
Not actually worked out the function of the sensor. I have had a faulty one throw the HDC light on, but not found it in wiring diagrams.

Found this in the RAVE version that includes TSB's, but wiring diagrams vary to whether the sensor shows for each ECU. TD4 is the only one with it shown to engine ECU. The later NAS RAVE wiring show it connected to Jatco ECU, but not the KV6 ECU !!

This is a great read I have had the same fault for over a year now drives ok so was not bothered, trued the break switch, and trued to adjust the safety natural switch but still there, will keep this post and when I have the motivation will look in to it further once again great post

It seems that across the various RAVE versions the info is there but incomplete in different ways in each version. It’s also spread in separate sections for descriptions & diagrams. Typical LR.

there’s also a TSB specifically about the shifter cable adjustment required for the F4 error.

Interesting write up, from that you could assume that if the vehicle is not a TD4 and doesn't have cruise then the hall effect sensor has no function. This is not true as a faulty one brings on the HDC light on a 1.8 manual !!
Wonder what the sensor info is used for ??

Probably faster acting than the brake switch. Could even be to provide an analog signal depending how hard the brake pedal is pressed to any of those ECU's.

Does seem pointless if it's just an on-off signal at same time as the switch.
