TD4 2005 grating noise

My Freelander (2005 TD4) has developed a strange fault. It's got a horrible grating type noise coming from near the drivers side front. No noise when stood still, starts as soon as you drive off. Noise doesn't increase with speed. Yet no loss in performance, steering, braking etc....doesn't pull to one side, nothing feels excessively hot to touch after a run out, nothing seems loose, and nothing seems to be catching.

Any ideas????

Yep, and they are only about 4 months old, and not alot of mileage on them.

Just had my prop off to replace goosed VC bearings, they were transmitting noise to near the nearside and offside front wheels ( any noise under the center console?? ) sounded bloody awful.. once up to 40 you couldn't hear them..

VCU and prop bearings were done in Nov, so hope its not them...........its a strange noise, seems be from between the wheel and the centre of the front of the car.

Probably not the problem, but does yours have the fuel burning heater in it? Could it be that firing up?

No, doesn't have one fitted...cheers though.

i would check those propshaft bearing again what make are they?

indeed i had exactly the same simptoms after have the bearings replaced turns out the garage that did it used cheapo bearings and they went again after 2000miles

Cheers for the replies, spoke to garage who fitted them......and they are going to check them, as they have had a bad batch, and if it's them, they will be replaced with better ones under warranty.

Had a similar noise once, turned out to be a small stone caught behind the brake disk.

Just had the front end jacked up at the same time, both wheels move with the same resistance. And only a normal resistance type noise when spinning each wheel, both wheels make the same noise. And neither is louder than the other.

Next question, should there be any play in the VCU prop bearings. Either rotational or up and down?

Drivers side of the engine has the aux belts , and pulleys for hp fuel pump , pas pump ,water pump , ac etc also the timing chain

All seems well with all the above, as said doesn't make a noise whilst stationary. Had a recon HP pump fitted a couple of months ago.

Could a drive shaft have cracked a few teeth?
Maybe even the drive shaft bearings, I don't think you'd hear much difference without the weight on the front wheels, can you not push or be pulled and walk along side the car to listen in a bit more. Try climbing underneath too, and grab it, then see if there's any play or rattles.
With you saying it stops when stationary and you can't hear it with front end up, I reckon its the drive shaft bearings.

Cheers for the advice mate, did give the drive shaft a good rattle, shake and tried twisting etc from underneath, both sides have the same slight play......booked into the garage on Monday, when I'm off work. So will find out then. Fingers crossed.

Was a faulty prop support bearing, now changed for GKN bearings.
