TD 5 new injectors?

Hi all,
Discovery ll, 2004 TD5 (116,000 miles) -

I am trying to sort out a "clattery" engine and I have made some progress but need some advice regarding replacement of the injectors. The engine is new (only 600 miles so far) but it has a bad diesel clatter which has been greatly improved by calibrating the injectors on the local independents computer - (Auto Logic I think).

The mechanic was very helpful and explained that the injectors are not new but taken from the original engine and that it looks like at least 2 need to be replaced. He gave me these figures from the readout ....
cylinder 1 minus 2
2 minus 2
3 minus 8
4 plus 9
5 plus 6

he reckons injectors 4 and 5 are knackered and that maybe all 5 are due for replacement..

The clatter is definitely caused by a bit of inaccurate fuelling as the recent setup of the injection system has improved it quite a lot. ie less clatter. I also noticed that the air filter was very dirty and a new one has also made an improvement - (not enough air getting into the mixture?) also less clatter. I think that the "worn" injectors are overfuelling and causing the problem.

Questions....
Can anyone confirm / comment on the mechanics recommendations?
Where is the best (cheapest?) place to buy 5 new injectors?
If I fit them myself has anyone got a computer I can use so I can set them up again? - failing that will a Nanocom be capable of allowing me to enter the new injector codes to the ecu? (Warrington area) I dont have one but it may be worth buying one.

Oh... and if I ever get my hands on the man that decided where to place the oil filter I will kill him.. exhausts get very hot and burn like buggery!!

Thanks in advance...

John

those figure's dont look too bad. the ECU would pick up a duff injector.

You could have them tested. theres a place (ad in one of the landy mags) does em for about £30 each and £200 overhauled.

you can programme the injectors with a Nanocom

Thanks... can you explain what the numbers mean? I have had a look at replacement injectors - Mansfield 4x4 want £400 and Famous Four seem to have the same thing for £265 - seems to be a big difference in price - would it be safe to assume that the cheaper ones are recons? God knows how much a Land Rover dealer would charge......

Not really sure what to do now..... if the injectors are worn and therefore over fueling then I guess the excess fuel will wash oil off the cylinder walls and maybe find its way past the rings in time?

I will sleep on it!

ps if the damn central locking keeps locking me in as I drive off it will give me a heart attack what a clunk as they all lock! Can it be turned off?

number relate to what the ECU is doing to each injector to give a good idle. I'm 99% the figures dont mean anything except at idle.

Use the Nanocom to change the door locking (under body control unit)

Injector figures are fine, I would get the cam timing checked, 10 mins work by the right guy. TD5 injectors really don't fail very often, and it's very obvious when they do.

If you have had the engine changed and they have used the old injectors then check that the injectors are in the correct cylinders. If this is incorrect then the engine will run but it will sound funny and not preform well. The codes are on the top of the injectors and need programing in to the respective cylinders . Also if you had no injector problems befor the work, then it is unlikley to just had a problem now.

Hi.

It is HIGHLY unlikely that you need a full set of injectors, as these units are supposed to be good for 500,000 km,s, (according to Delphi ). Any " clatter " will more than likely incorrectly set injector clearance. ( this is adjustment of the rocker that pushes the injector piston down to create the high injection pressure ).

As has been said, the numbers you have been are the injector " roughness " figures, and, at idle, they should be around +/- 3/4, however, a bigger number does not automatically mean a duff injector.

If the ECU is unable to " adapt " a particular injector, it will log a fault, and even this can be a one off, and after the fault has been cleared, it may not return.

A HawkEye/Nanocom is an invaluable tool when maintaing a TD5, and if you had one of these, you could keep an eye on your fault codes. ( you could well save the cost of 5 injectors by spending the price of one ! ).

Over fuelling may well be caused by the dirty air filter. Again, a diagnostic tool will let you read the information from various engine sensors and point you in the right direction when fault finding.

When I had one of my injectors tested, the tester told me that they test no end of these unit injectors and a very small percentage are faulty.

My advise is, do not go buying any new injectors yet, but check the clearances and see if you can get the ECU read for faults.

Del.
