Tax exemption... confused...

Hi All,

I own a 1973 Landy and I am thoroughly confused about tax... My tax runs out at the end of this month, but I'm not sure whether I'll need to pay for the new disc...

Currently vehicles build before 1st Jan 1973 are tax exempt: https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-exempt-from-car-tax

However in last years budget it was announced that from April 2014 this would change to 1st Jan 1974 Budget 2013: Classic car VED exemption extended to 1974 - Telegraph

But when I called the DVLA to enquire I was told that this was just a rumor, but that something may be announced with this year's March budget... I'm watching the budget but haven't seen anything about historic vehicles... I also can't find anything about it on the DVLA website...

Can anybody shed some light? Is it actually going to be announced in April and I should SORN it for a month? Or am I out of luck and will need to pay tax :(

Just a quick update for anybody wondering:

I called the DVLA and was told that from April 1st I can take my log book and MOT cert to the post office and they will issue a free tax disc and send my log book off to be changed for a historic one - the log book will take up to 4 weeks, but the tax disc will take effect immediately. Sounds easy enough :)
 
Is that 40 yrs from manufacture or first registration ?
If it's from manufacture how do I find out what date it was built. I have the serial number, so is there a register of dates built ?

Normal procedure is to go thru a club. I would think most national series clubs offer the service (? not in a Landy club, but my single make motorcycle clubs do). You normally get in touch with records officer, who will look up your vehicle in the records, give you a build date etc. You then go to DVLA. Records officer will know much more about the paperwork than me...

Years ago I had an ex-military Series 1, it was built before the requirement for seat belt fitment, but was registered after the fitment date due to being a military vehicle.

One of the lads from SROC had been it touch with either DLVC or the predecessor to VOSA, because there were a few of us who didn't have seatbelts fitted to ex-military Series LR, he received a letter stating that the build date of the vehicle over-ruled the registration date for seat belt fitment, so I would presume that year of manufacture would also be used for road tax exemption....of ex-military vehicles....

Land Rover used be helpful regarding chassis number build dates or theres always the Series Land Rover Club.

I agree build date is important date. iirc the legislation usually says "vehicles built before ...."

my s1 is a '54 but wasn't originally registered until '61 when it was demobbed but its still mot exempt, taxation wasn't an issue since build and registration are pre '73.

v5 has now been altered to reflect the build date for first registration and an age related plate given c.f. the A reg plate it got when it was demobbed.

Landrover build records are held bt the Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon. They will find the record of your vehicle's build date but it'll cost you £22 for a certificate (which you'd need to send to the DVLA, as I understand it).
I suspect my M reg S3 is already tax exempt, it was registered in Feb 1974 but originally built as an export model so she probably sat around in a compound somewhere for a few months before being registered for the home market. That's academic though, since she's in bits all over the house and garden. It'll easily be a year before she's up and running by which time I'll be sure
 
Well I popped into the post office today and explained the situation - they gave me a free tax disc and sent the v5 off for me - didn't even have to pay for the stamp!

Simples :D
