HI all
I was late for work yesterday and i was giving my little TD4 the beans (was allowed calm down for a few miles before i turned it off) but now when i start it i get this tapping noise for about 3 secs and then it goes.Seems to be coming from the right side.
Is it the sound of something about to go bang?
Thanks

Surely crank pulley would make a noise all the time? Try putting a screwdriver to your ear and listen to see if you can hear where the noise is comming from.

Probably, I missed the 3 seconds bit

I'v got a tapping tappet on my V6 for the first few seconds after start up. Could be that?

I was thinking tappet, or possibly alternator belt idler/ tensioner. Same as belts squeek the first few seconds you start them up as they are under load, maybe a noisey tensioner when under load. Hard to tell without hearing it. If you think it's anything to do with the belts you can either see or change the noise by spraying wd40 on the belt/ individual pulleys

Right it Did it again when I was sitting in traffic and increases with revs and goes away after a few seconds. Popped the bonnet and it's definitely coming from drivers side arch area. The belt has a 3mm slow side to side movement when it's turning. Oil is fine. Was changed 7k ago. I'll ty get a video later.

Sounds belt pulley or tensioner related. But still difficult to tell especially if it is intermittent. If it was always there it would be easier to tell

I doubt it.. I've just changed all my tensioners and idler pulleys and they don't knock- they screech like straight cut gears and it rises in pitch with revs.

Sounds very much like the whirring screech in this vid between 50-60s:

I had a crank pulley go on my MX5. It started with the slight knocking noise on occasion then eventually it wore around the woodruff keyway and came bad all the time along with a wobbly belt. I'd suspect the crank pulley myself.

Sounds a little more likely crank pulley then if it does it on tick over at traffic lights, I was thinking from original post it was only on for first few seconds. Still hard to guess without seeing

It was only on start up for a few seconds. It only Did it once at traffic lights and again was only for a few seconds. Trying to upload a video but you tube is acting up. It wouldn't be water pump Would it?

With the lateral belt movement your getting I'd still say crank pulley.

But then I don't know enough about TD4 to be sure.

I think you can rule out crank pulley like so . definitely so for TD5.

with the engine OFF by hand try to pull/push the drive belt round. If it wont move in either direction the fault maybe elsewhere. If it will move a distance then stop then the crank pulley damper has gone.

At that point to be sure you could remove the drive belt and see how much free play is in the crank pulley.

But see if you can move the drive belt first. Costs nothing ;)
