hi all
(its a 2002 freelander 1 with a 2.5 v6 engine with auto box)
if you listen to below vid ,anyone else think the noise could be tappets?

if so how do i sort them ?

The tappet is hydraulic. This means it will, or should take up any slack. It's not unheard of for valves to be bent by a bad belt change.
The KV6 can also suffer plenum flap valve failure, giving a similar sound. As yours isn't running on all 6 cylinders, I would guess at bent valves.

Failure of the VIS power valves, can sound like tappets, they don't cause the engine to run on 5 cylinders. A simple compression test will show you what you need to know ;)

Listening again, it does sound like a loose power valve. But it's also running on 5 cylinders. Maybe it's got a plug down too?

i will check the plugs and also do a compression test ,when you say loose power valve is that the thing in the manifold ? i wish i could tell by noise that its only running on 5 cyclinders instead of 6 lol but im a chef if it was food i would know the answer lol

think after doing a little reading from the mg forum your right and i think im going to have a good look at the inlet manifold may even try the taking it a part fully to repair the butterfly valves if needed then try and maybe plastic weld the manifold back shut ? i did say TRY lol

The power valves are the valves that make a noise when they break loose from the control rod. When this happens they just flap open and shut as the cylinders draw on the air in the chamber. By closing and opening in this uncontrolled way, they don't block the air into the cylinder, it's simply drawn from the long runner instead.
This flappy valve doesn't cause loss of 1 or more cylinders. I would get a replacement plenum and do a compression test. All cylinders should give 175 Psi + or - 10 Psi. Any lower the 165 Psi in 1 or more cylinders will cause running issues.
Getting to the rear bank to fit the compression gauge is interesting due to the lack of space.
Hacking the plenum open is possible but it's not at all easy and resealing can't be guaranteed, hence getting a replacement ;)

hi again ,

been round to car again tonight but of course its dark :-(

i ran it up to temp ,the noise seemed to go less loud ,but on tick over it sits lovely at around 800 revs ,it does not hunt or any thing ,if it was only running on 5 cylinders instead of 6 would it not hunt ????

They actually idle quite well on 5. Take it for a drive and you would know something isn't right. It's possible that once hot it's started running on all 6 again. It was sitting about for a while. If the HG has failed, water could have damped out a plug. This will dry when hot, giving you 6 cylinders again.
